As far as exposure I have moved to a more passive level of promoting, I use YouTube as I usually would with commenting and liking videos, not in the sense of pointing others to my channel but for genuine interest. This I believe shows a level of authenticity with my interaction and that is what I want for anyone visiting my channel. True Interest. I do the same for Facebook and Twitter now as well. I lend myself to the thinking of "Give more then I get" in terms of sharing and promoting. I wouldn't say this is the end all be all to getting a lot of views, but for me I would say quality is more important then quantity in the long run.

What I mean by that is, do you think there's a way to get more people checking out your channel by you commenting?

I don't mean spamming and self promoting, I mean actual commenting. Maybe commenting on other YouTubers in your niche's videos and really just on videos in general. Maybe someone could find your comment interesting or see you have an eye-catching profile picture and decide to check you out. And if they like your stuff, they may subscribe and become a fan.

So I'm wondering, do you think this is an okay method to use on the side or do you think it won't work at all.

I think this absolutely works, especially if you're present and comment on another channel's videos day in and day out, other regular viewers of that channel begin to recognize your comments, and if you seem appealing to them in any way, they're probably going to check your channel out a bit once they realize you're a YouTuber as well.

Dude, thanks for asking this question. I actually wanted to ask the same few minutes ago. But I actually would love to know another thing. How do you find videos in your niche you can comment on. I am doing an entrepreneur vlog for example and as a smart boy I would obviously go to Gary Vee's channel, the problem with that is, he is maybe great, but he is my main competitor with his agency work. How do you find the right content? Or should you comment across all niches and try to find people from other channels, other than just from entrepreneurs?

A great way to find other smaller channels in your niche is to first start with the popular channels within it. On these popular channel's videos you'll find plenty of smaller YouTubers that draw inspiration from these bigger guys and they'll be commenting frequently. Just read through the comments and curse over their channel name to see how many subscribers they have. The thumbnail usually helps you identify if they might be a YouTuber or not. If the sub number is anything over a random small number (I'd say around 100+, but a few hundred+ draws a lot more attention to me), you can then check out their channel and see if you'd enjoy their content as well. I actually feel like the channels that have around 1k-20k subs seem like great places to actively comment and not get drowned out by too many other comments. This way you'll be seen by many and have more chance of having your channel checked out more often. I feel like being an active in the comment sections very regularly is important so you'll be recognized by many active viewers who aren't uploading and are looking for more good content to absorb each day.

This seems to work for me! Hope it helps you guys out as well!

I think this absolutely works! I think I've gotten most of my subs that way (even though I'm just a fetus youtuber right now), but yes! Either way, it's good to get out there and give feedback on videos you enjoy. If you like the youtuber, the video, or even a post on this forum, it doesn't hurt to comment :D You never know who will like what you say and will then go check out your channel

Agreed, Being friendly never hurts.

If your comment is good and not self promoting I would guess it might attract some viewers to your own channel, or get some attention from that channels community to hang on to your channel aswell.

I really like your approach. Authenticity can only come from genuine interest and it's very off-putting if people can tell that your comments are a chore or the copy and paste type. Also I agree with you that you should treat other peoples channels the way you would like people to treat yours.

Fantastic advice here! Usually we comment here and there on videos we like from the bigger channels, and try to interact more with other channels the same size as us. For bigger channels the comments do get buried in the stream, but for channels our size their comments section in manageable with 10-100 comments. We get decent numbers of people coming over, subscribing and commenting too on our channel. So it defitely works. However I had not really considered it as an active subscriber building strategy until reading the posts here.

Isn't it still spamming if the whole intent is simply to have people notice your channel? I mean it might be disguised as a genuine comment, but still.....just some food for thought.

Yes, technically perhaps. But notice their channel for what reason? If it's to build a relationship, is that wrong? An an example, how many advertisements do you get in the letter box every week? We just got a big enough bundle that I can throw it at a window and break it. There's Kmart, Target, real restate agents, local restaurants, about 3 from pizza joints, on and on. Do I consider that letter-box spamming? No. It's businesses trying to get the word out on specials and new products and especially new businesses in the area trying to make residents aware that they have opened and what they offer. I don't see how that's too much different to a new channel trying to reach out and make contact with similar minded channels. Channels/businesses/people try to reach out in whatever way the platform allows them, on YT it's mostly comments and subbing.
Whenever someone does a "let's sub" or "let's be friends" comment on our channel, I always approve the comment and head over to their channel to see what they have. If it's interesting and they upload regularly (so a viable channel), I subscribe to them. Just like tonight we ordered pizzas from the flyer we got in the mail to give the new shop a try.
