Ever worry about employers?

I used to care, but all of a sudden I stopped caring because I decided that the industry I want to work in is accepting of this type of stuff anyway. I have had a few people see it who I would have preferred if they didn't see, but it's not a huge deal if they see either.
At some point I'm going to start making videos that are likely help me find a job. I do technical tutorials and as long as I act professionally in the videos it will only help. Right now I'm trying to get through a bunch of car repair videos that I have stacked up. But I want to start some coding/programing type videos. I work as a developer, so it should help if I'm forced to find a new job. Car repair videos won't help me there.
we're all in the same boat then -- our videos will eventually help with our professional goals. i love that our passion/hobby can help support our careers :)

@Harry Of All Trades that sounds great that you're diversifying your content! i'm taking a class on programming and i'm designing a website from scratch for my final project.. it's difficult but really satisfying, and knowing how to code by hand is a really competitive skill i feel :thumbsup2:

@EsiMagic yeah, the weirdest/coolest/awkwardest thing was when i visited my husband in england and his 70+ year old father told me he watched all of my videos and was surprised i didn't "pluck my eyebrows" in one of my getting-ready-with-me vlogs. LOL so awkward. not an employer but still lol

Well I am just a vlogger , I share my life in Japan with my daughter it would just show that I am a regular person with a creative hobby I guess

Yea it was a tough decision, but I had to give up the life of being a secret agent to start my youtube channel. I hope I made the right choice.

To avoid all that I either never mention where I work at all, or I never name my actual employee. Like if I were work at some restaurant, I'd just say that, without actually naming it or going into too much detail as to what kinda restaurant it is.

Coming from a professional career with 10 years of business experience, this was definitely a major concern for me and a primary reason I waited so long to start a youtube channel.

One day I decided I just didn't want to wait any longer and cast those fears aside. I decided it was time to live for me and not anyone else.

But I still am cautious and haven't revealed my full name. I probably won't until I know I can fully support myself from youtube and won't have to worry about the impact for a while. That said, I think my next position I accept if I do go back to working a regular job would be in social media, so I think my channel will only benefit me in that case.

I'm looking to work in entertainment as well, so I guess its fine with me. In fact I'm more worried about someone else with my name getting famous first and registering with Screen Actors Guild first (cause for some F***-ing reason you can't ahve two actors with the same name on the registry WTF) but yeah, I do use a variation of my real name for Youtube and online stuff so just as a little precaution jsut in case, but hopefully I won't have to use it XD

I don't think I would want to work for a company who has enough time to stalk me and make hiring decisions based primarily on Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc.. I can understand them looking at Linkedin, and perhaps quickly glancing over Facebook for red flags, but anything more in-depth shows they have way too much free time to really need another position filled.

My coworkers and boss know that I play violin, write songs, and perform around town. I even organized a company ensemble where all the employees who played musical instruments got together to play a few holiday songs during the company's Christmas party. It was so much fun! ^_^ I think it's good to share hobbies with them because you spend a ton of time together during the week...

But..I have not mentioned my YouTube channel. I think they are more likely to find me outside awkwardly making a video on the weekend than they are to find my channel on the Internet. If they ask, then I'll answer truthfully, but I'm not going to go out of my way to bring it up....

do you ever worry about what a potential employer will think when he or she googles you and finds your videos? perhaps many of you don't have this worry because you use a unique YouTube name, but for those of you that use your actual name.. does this concern you?

i'm not too worried, because i'm going into the marketing field so it's actually a PLUS that i can demonstrate familiarity with YouTube as well as growing views, subscribers, etc. however.. I do feel slightly embarrassed thinking about a future employer watching an OOTD video of mine or something. i will definitely keep on doing my thing, since i enjoy it, but like.. still.. awkward to think about
Potential employers are not going to find me, since I'm not using any searchable personal information. My current employer and my colleagues don't know about the existence of my Youtube channel. I would like to keep it that way.

I don't think it matters if my employer knows about my video. I think what I do outside of my work is personal and if it doesn't affect my work directly I don't see it being an issue!
