Do shoutouts really work?

I do think shoutouts work and definitely do help your channel grow and get people watching your videos but it completely depends how they done this and who the shoutout is coming from..

I mean just look at Jacksepticeye he got a shoutout from Pewdiepie and after that he got lots of people watching his videos and got very big/popular on YouTube which it is good example of getting a "good" shoutout from a Youtuber! :)
 
Yes - shout outs work very well only if you are already in the top 1% or so of your niche in terms of video quality/audience engagment and the person who gives you a shout out is in the same or very close niche and (obviously) the person who shouts you out has substantial amount of active viewers (please notice - active viewers - not subscribers)
In all other cases they are pure waste of time for the person who was shouted out.
 
I actually looked up a few shout outs PewDiePie did a few years ago and noticed a few things. One particular shout out was when Jacksepticeye was one of the winners. I do believe a shout out in general will help boost a channel but only when the channel was already gaining subs organically on a regular basis and already has at least around 100 high quality videos uploaded. From the list of people that won, Jacksepticeye had the most success and a few others reached roughly a million subs but the rest had less than 100K subs. And when I say the rest of them I mean nearly more than half of them (5 out of 12 if I remember correctly). Also I noticed that most of these winners roughly got between 10K - 20K subs after the shout out. So I think a shout out only really helps a channel when it's ready for it. What I mean by that is, the channel should be able to produce a video at a certain level of quality to really take advantage of the shout out. Also the channel giving you the shout out should probably be some what similar to your own.
 
They work when the channel giving the shoutout has a big enough audience that is also interested in your content. I had shoutouts from channels that are in a completely different niche and they didn't work at all.
 
It was interresting reading through all of the comments, as this was something i wondered for a while myself. I remember when i just started, my very first comment was this guy that did shoutouts. Thats all he did. I went to his channel and clicked on a random video. All he did was play a game on the background, react to when he died, meanwhile about 10 to 20 names scrolled on the screen.
