[closed] YouTube's New "Advertiser-Friendly" Policy (all discussion goes here) **

I think it is a good thing. It forces people to clean up their act or become a starving artist. There are plenty of good channels with no swearing / controversial subjects that are waiting to take their place.
I still don't see how fitting into these guidelines makes you a "good" channel. The content is not marked unmonetized for just being controversial, it's marked for simply engaging in discussion about any controversial subject.

Does this make me a "bad" channel if I simply talk about a subject that has mixed opinions? That's ridiculous.

It means even talking about these very updates to YouTube would be against its own advertiser friendly policy, with them being controversial policies within the YouTube community.

It doesn't seem to effect DeFranco because the very video that started this whole thread is still being monetized and making him money as we debate about it lol See that little yellow pip in the timetracker of his video? That's an ad.

You could say that for many videos right now lol. I would doubt they'd be 100% proficient in applying their policy to every video out there. Now that they're starting to really enforce it on larger youtubers anyway.

But it has definitely affected phillipdefranco with his other videos which have had more to be reviewed if that's what you were getting at?

Maybe what I'm getting is that he shouldn't be making videos that talk about other people's personal business and making money off them lol If there's a public dispute between two or more specific people on social media, or one particular person who makes an incredibly offensive joke, why not just let them deal with it instead of butting in on their business and making a video about, potentially making things worse for everyone.

I checked out your channel, and it's pretty good. A lot of us here work hard on our content and brand. But doesn't it bother you even a little that there are youtubers that have channels reeling in so much attention when all they do is gossip for 10 minutes while we're coming up with our own commentary for what we play for up to half an hour?

A appreciate that, and am glad your enjoyed my content.

In regards to channels like that I personally don't see a problem. TV news has been around for ages. While YouTube channels similar are obviously less transparent about it and often voice their own opinions, people want news and to know about what's going on in the community. I personally don't have the slightest problem with channels that report it.

Plus if you want to talk about gaming commentaries, aren't us gaming channels simply making use of games the same way they make use of popular topics? Isn't it the actual meat and substance provided from the game your playing that drives your commentaries?

Anyway I've been having a look at DeFranco's channel as of late, I really haven't come across anything I would call click bait. All videos I've come across have talked about the subject in the title, and any pictures in the thumbnail. None of it really seemed like fake advertisement at all

But YouTube wasn't the same as Primetime TV, it's only been the past few years or so that it's been treated like it. A lot of people, like myself, were tired of TV and the devolution of the TV networks and channels we grew up with. A lot of people turned to YouTube and the internet in general to get away from Reality-based TV. And it finally gave a lot of us a form to pour our creativity into something people with similar interests could enjoy, not mudsling.

And that depends on the game. Anyone can play minecraft and simply talk about what they're building, but it takes more than a little substance to throw in your own in-jokes and references through backstory and role-play. Not all games spurn negative gossip nor does all commentary, but that doesn't mean they can't be good games or commentary. My own commentary might not be the best, but at least I don't throw shade at other people in my videos while still being honest about what I talk about. Sometimes, LPers, especially in groups, will have a dynamic in their commentary that will somehow go off-topic and make the LP even more interesting. But that's up to the viewers personally. And that's all reinforced if you're an LPer that plays older games, not everyone can play the latest, hottest games on release to show everyone on YouTube, and those are the games that usually make the most views. If you're more niche by playing really indie or older games, then you have to rely moreso on your commentary and personality because those games won't draw in as much attention.

And what's the problem? It's not like news channels impede on the creativity of other channels. At the end of the day I feel creators should be able to make many diverse types of content. News or discussion on popular topics is no exception.

At the end of the day it's not about effort anyway. It's entertainment in the real world and that's simply about whether people want to watch you videos, and how well you've done to market it to those people. News channels know people want news and know that people want to know about x y z YouTuber so they make videos about them. I'll still stand by it being ridiculous that the policy doesn't even allow you to talk about an issue or topic that has mixed opinions, which obviously are the topics that get talked about the most.

In any case, this is getting into a different argument.
What I'm more interested in is how it affects different niches. I'm sure we all know it will leave the music industry alone because that would defeat the original purpose of trying to get more advertisers, yet it's still very unprincipled the way controversial and sexual music will show YouTube's double standard.

More on that, will many skit style channels like collegehumor and Smosh have sexual humour and drug related videos affected?

We are honestly starting to go around in circles here lol It's pretty clear neither of us wants to move from where we stand on this issue, so sorry about that.

But the last thing I'll say about all of this is that both of us are gamers and LPers with our own styles and commentaries. I'm not sure if the change in policies has changed your monetized videos, but as of right now, despite my channel being much smaller than yours, my videos are still monetized and I hope yours are, too. Honestly, my deepest concern, as an LPer that also plays with mods for the games I play, is the good standing of my own channel compared to other channels that are definitely using clickbait to draw in more views. I won't drop any names because I won't throw shade on anyone, but some modded LPers like using slutty thumbnails, disgustingly perverted commentary and mods in some of the latest games that replace the vanilla women's body models with overly large breasts, nude mods and skimpy clothes.

Times like these, from a personal standpoint, I'd rather focus on the well-being of my own channel than others that have been well off on their own for a long time already.

The problem with smosh, difranco, pewdiepie and the other very big and very low quality channels is that they have extremely limited in terms of demographics audience appeal (mainly some kids and very young people). Sorry - but there are limits what you can sell to this type of audience and this hurts YT. So YT is simply trying to protect itself by limiting their disproportionate exposure by hitting their most efficient spam/scam viral tactics (shock topics/faulty language etc - kids love this). That's all.
As somebody said - we better see some of these big channels curtailed than whole of the YT gone down the drain.

PS. The argument of limiting free speech in the context of these type channels is completely laughable. :)

Advertisers can opt to avoid having their ads on videos or sites with certain keywords, seo, etc etc- youtube is doing this on their own, as a way to silence their content creators.[DOUBLEPOST=1472797567,1472797542][/DOUBLEPOST]YouTube is NOT a streaming service like Netflix, Hulu, or even HBO NOW. They're making a big mistake trying to push their way in to an arena they dont even have the content to be in. The reason people like YouTube is that it's free! Same with the search engine Google. Could you imagine having to pay $10 each month to search things on Google? I can't. And I wouldn't pay a single dime.
