Being a Youtuber when you have roommates..

Maybe have someone join as you as a camera man, or just to hang with you when you're filming in public, even if they're not in the video. That ways people will think you're talking to the other person rather than to the camera, or that person can tell anyone that gives you odd stares like 'oh, this is for youtube',

When I was in college making videos on my old channel, I had roommates. Honestly, because of college, it was easy to record when they had classes and I didn't! However, I'm pretty sure they knew, I just never specifically addressed it with them.

Are you roommates not your friends too? I would not have a problem telling my roommates what I'm doing. Or just keep doing it and they will probably eventually ask, and then its easier to show them what you are doing

Thanks for your answers!

No, I do talk to them but we don’t socialize other than when we meet in the queue for the bathroom or in the kitchen Yeah, maybe I should just do it, and if they ask... I just tell them..

If you have a car, vlog in there...I used to go out at night and record all my videos in my car because it's practically sound proof and people dont bat an eye when they see someone talking to themselves in a car :D

failing that record late at night when everyones asleep. If it's too cold to go out or if you dont have a car I usually will wait till 1-2am and then record all mine in one big chunk. it gets it out of the way and people rarely notice...plus if you ever did get caught and you didnt want to go into details you could always say you were just chatting on skype with headphones on...

I wouldn't worry too much about what other people think. Life is far too short for that! Try to gather up some courage and just tell them, or just say you're trying to get better at being in front of a camera or something haha!

If you're really self conscious let them know that you do YouTube. It doesn't have to be a long talk, just let them know that occasionally you'll be in the room talking to yourself. ooooorrr you can just do your thing and have them thinking you're talking to friends in your room all the time lol.

Hi guys!

So I feel like I have a problem. I really want to work on my channel, but the issue is that I have 2 other roommates. I dont know them, but have of course talked a little with them but they dont know Im doing this. And its very easy to hear through the doors here, so I feel awkward sitting here and talking to myself

Anyone here in the same situation, or maybe have some advice what I can do? Its as though I feel embarressed for starting a Youtube channel, and thats just stupid..
Try having 3 kids! I record everything at 3-4 am and usually they wake up anyway

I think it's normal to feel awkward vlogging/filming in public and with other people in the house/room/apartment. I think it's just something to get used to... :/ I'm still not used to it, but I've learned that the more ridiculous I may appear to other people, the more everyone else has fun watching, lol! It's fun to see people having fun, so, I've been feeling a little bolder when filming in some public places... I'd just tell your roommates that you want to make YouTube videos, and that's why you talk a lot in your room. ^^

If background noises are a problem in your home, you may be able to get a cardioid microphone that isolates close-by sounds.
