Am I just tag inept????

This is a channel authority issue. Channel authority is based on views/subs/totalwatchtime ect. If you take 10 YouTubers who each post the exact same video with the exact same title and tags YouTube will list them in search based on the channel authority. Basically it's an advantage to channels that are already big. Your SEO is probably fine, you're just competing in a popular space - this is actually a good thing. If you're a small channel and you're coming up first in search you're probably not in a vertical that gets enough views to matter.
 
its not going to rank well if youre using broad tags and also a new video will not show up in search results immediately it takes time to get into the system usually between 24 to 48 hours
 
I agree, title and description are more important then tags, I just make sure I cover everything then turn to promotion, and that is a real grind considering I use my personal Facebook and I don't have a lot of active friends, same for twitter. just recently have been working on building up my Instagram because from what I hear its an awesome platform for exposure. But not without work.
