I'm gonna be honest. The fact that anyone on this forum uses AdBlock infuriates me.

Ads KEEP YOUTUBE ALIVE. They're not spam, they're not there to intrude upon your life. Without them, there is no YouTube, and with that everyone's dream of doing YouTube full time evaporates.

I'd never pay $8 for just YouTube videos, like... no. I wouldn't even pay for Netflix honestly, not my type of stuff. I'd pay double for the WWE Network though. Vince McMahon you evil, evil b*****d.

I'd definitely be curious to see what the pay model is for channels when people pay. Like I said, I'm willing to bet it turns into a Spotify-like "per stream" model. You pay and then it's your views of the CONTENT that matter since the ads are gone.

I personally watch the ads. I want to support the people that I like watching. I feel like its the least i can do.

On a side note, I have noticed there are a ton of people that have little to no patience. Most of my tutorials are real time. which means they can be 10 - 20 minutes, and I get a ton of people commenting about how long and boring the tutorials are, that I should add music and shorten them to 2 - 5 minutes.

Haha, with tutorials I think I can SORT of see how that happens. I think when a lot of people are looking for a tutorial, they just want a quick answer to a question. So they fire up a video and they're all impatient and trying to get a specific answer but you've got a full tutorial, so they get all bent out of shape and argggh hurry up! It's BS, but I've been there. Someone puts all this work into a great video but I'm in a bad mood because I couldn't figure something out so I'm going "OH MY GOD HURRY UP TO THE THING I NEEDED THAT YOU HAD NO WAY OF KNOWING WAS THE PART I NEEDED."

On the other hand, you're right that YT viewers just in general are impatient. On big channels it's amazing how many comments and up/down votes pop up within 30 seconds of a video being posted.

I think YouTube is trying a strategy to become a bit more like pay TV. They have already enabled pay subscription option which channels can charge their subscribers. Although, I don't think many youtubers are doing this yet but I can absolutely see a shift. Looking at the top youtubers (i.e The Gleam Team), they are pushing Tanya Burr to be more active in other platforms and also grooming her for television and books. As for her other half Jim Chapman, like a lot of more popular YouTubers, he has two channels. So, you can potentially do paid subscription for one and keep the other one free as a tempter. There are + and - to this. The minus is paying to watch videos. But the + are for small youtubers to get more audience as our channels will still be free. Its probably just me reading too much into this .. but just a thought.

You make a lot of good points. If big channels put themselves behind a paywall it'll be seriously helpful for smaller channels who don't.

At the same time, it's hard not to see that happening eventually. As much as we all like to imagine YouTube just being golly gosh gee whiz free cuz I sure like entertainin', it just can't sustain. It needs to be economically viable. If it's not, new models will need to emerge.

Considering most of the people I know barely even pay the $8 for netflix and rather piggyback eachother's accounts I find it slim to none that people will actually pay for that esp as most already mentioned with Ad blockers so easily accessible.

Still, Netflix is huge. They've been able to create a lot of original shows due to their success. They have over 50 million members so they're obviously getting a LOT of money to make those. If youtube could capture the same kind of membership base as Netflix then they'll be able to pay their creators a share of the revenue. However, it seems like there needs to be more of an incentive to buy into it. Like having some of the shows and movies available on youtube free to watch since Netflix doesn't have everything available to stream.
