$8 a Month for Ad Free Youtube

I feel like there's this bubble that's about to burst with YouTube.

People have gotten comfortable with YT essentially being "free television". They expect people to spend their lives making awesome videos for us to watch but not to have to do anything to help support them, not even watch ads for a few seconds. I know tons of people who barely watch TV any more in favor of their preferred channels. I'm one of them, honestly. I have YT going on in the background more than anything else.

Yet throughout it all, everyone has such a "give me everything I want right now and no I don't want to pay for it." Making a good YouTube channel is not free. It takes time, capital, and resources not only from the content creators but from the site that hosts them. So far all YouTube has done is ask that you watch a few ads now and again. Now there's the OPTION to pay a few bucks a month to support an absolutely ENORMOUS operation that has provided people with years of content and everyone is bent out of shape.

That doesn't explain why you'd use AdBlock. Ads are free. They ask nothing for you other than your time. Unless you're sprinting frantically home with exactly 10 minutes to watch one YouTube video in between your two jobs and can't spare ten seconds, there's no excuse.

Actually, scrap that. There's no excuse at all. There is no such thing as a human being whose time is so limited that the paltry few ads you get on YouTube makes it prohibitive. You're acting entitled and selfish. Turn that off, man. Let the ads run, the channels you love RELY upon those ads.

I remember seeing some numbers a big channel ran and it was AWFUL how many viewers use adblock. Like, it is SO DIFFICULT to make it as a YouTuber not just because of how hard it is to get big, but because of how many viewers block the ads. And that's it. A few little ads. But no, that's too much.

What you're saying is "I want you to spend weeks making videos for me, but I don't want to spend 15 seconds on an ad before I watch it in order to help you make a living."

I admit I run adblock, but ANY site I like? I turn it off for that. My whitelist is pretty long. I keep it on hand just so I can check out links I get sent without my screen exploding with ads everywhere. It's a spam filter, not an inconvenience filter.[DOUBLEPOST=1424459243][/DOUBLEPOST]

I believe anyone CAN block adblockers in the sense of if they realize you're running one they can totally change the content.

I would not at ALL be surprised if, eventually, YouTube converts to a Spotify-style existence where there's a free version, but it has ads and you're limited to 480p videos. If you want HD and no ads you'll have to pay.

I'd also wager that in the new model, it would actually be BETTER for content creators because then they could be paid by traffic in the way that Spotify pays artists per song streamed. But that's just me spitballing.
 
Why?

Either the ads are too large, obnoxious, flashing, interactive or are simply not irrelevant to my interests. I do not want ads for crappy mobile games, cars, beauty products, sports or video games that do not fall into my range of interest.

Also, Adblock is OFF for this site.

And yet, you want to watch those channels for free. Without even spending a few seconds letting an ad run in order to give them the revenue they need to continue making it. It's such painful entitlement. You expect these people to dedicate themselves to entertaining you, but how dare they expect YOU to give a few seconds of time back to them? What selfish jerks those YouTubers are! Who do they think they are, trying to earn money as entertainers? I have to have a full time job outside of YouTubing, so should they! Screw the arts!

It's selfish, man. Like... it's REALLY selfish. You're telling those creators that their hard work isn't even worth 15 seconds of watching an ad. That their passion and dedication to providing you with FREE entertainment isn't enough for you to be willing to do ANYTHING to support them. You just want to get everything for free, immediately, without even the SLIGHTEST inconvenience. Gimme gimme gimme.
 
Considering most of the people I know barely even pay the $8 for netflix and rather piggyback eachother's accounts I find it slim to none that people will actually pay for that esp as most already mentioned with Ad blockers so easily accessible.
 
I do hope y'all realize that the more AdBlockers get used, the higher the likelihood is that YT will eventually start removing features from its free version in order to softly force people to pay.
 
I am not going to bother arguing on this subject anymore. Yes, I am selfish in some aspects but I value my limited time on this plane of existence and there is nothing you can do to budge me from not using Adblock.

I miss the 90s internet..
 
Except that. Most things are corporatized and most big sites it's about money money money or making it back from hosting costs. I miss the simplicity of early internet.

I'd say I'm more cynical than selfish. I am generally cold and lacking empathy for anything outside my family, friends and closer internet friends. I can be a jerk to someone and heartwarming to another.

Walls of text will not change my overall opinion on the subject.

That's sad, then. It's very sad. This is probably why YouTube is slowly rolling out pay services. People think that their time is more precious than even the smallest effort from users to help keep the site afloat. It is, literally, the least you can do. Yet you won't.

As for the 90s, did we all forget that back then literally the ONLY way to have your own work on the internet was either paying out the NOSE for your own domain, which wouldn't show up on search engines unless you paid THEM, or you could have used Angelfire and Geocities which were... AD BASED! That's right! Since the dawn of the internet, free content hosting has ALWAYS come with ads. Why? Because it's not free to host and have bandwidth.

Quite literally, in the time it took you to write that response you could have let an ad play at the beginning of a video and then tabbed over to watch it. You obviously have time to cultivate and run a YouTube channel, yet somehow there's zero space in your oh so busy day that could have a tiny little ad running? I do not buy this. At all. It's not about lack of time, it's not about business, it's just pure and simple self-entitlement.

I'm sorry, GENUINELY, for coming across like I'm attacking you or anyone else, but this is one of those topics I'm SERIOUSLY passionate about. It drives me CRAZY that people are so self-absorbed that they see no problem with kneecapping someone giving them FREE ENTERTAINMENT just because they can't watch a stupid AD. Everyone wants everything instantly and for free. Ads in free apps get bad reviews. Adblockers on YouTube. Meanwhile no one will PAY if that's offered as a separate option either. Like they think entertainment just drops out of the sky and there's no reason to think anyone should earn a living doing it if it means that I should EVER be mildly inconvenienced as I gobble up my free media (because obviously I won't pay for anything).
