Hey guys, time for another tutorial! If you missed the others, I have threads/videos on:
-How to start your channel on the right foot!
-How to Get Your Channel to 100 Subs!
-How to Get Thousands of Views, Even as a Small Channel!

This tutorial will be taking you through the steps on how to place an effective ad for your channel, in order to boost growth and get your channel ahead of the competition. As always, the video is below for those that like that format, but there will be text instructions as well. I am not a complete expert at this, and others may have suggestions for improvement. If you do, please constructively leave them below so others can benefit from your knowledge as well.

How To Use Ads to Grow Your Channel! Get Subs Fast Using Youtube Video Ads by ohaple

First, why run an ad for your channel? Well in several areas of youtube (gaming for instance) the market is over-saturated with channels. As a new youtuber, you need to do what you can to climb above other channels. Part of this is conquering youtube's system, and allowing your videos to be found. If you plan on making your channel a business, the money spent in the first year of your channel on ads will pay off in dividends later.

Now how to do it:
  1. Make a 30sec-1min long channel trailer. Make sure it has an eye-catching thumbnail as well! For an example, you can see mine here: Welcome to My Channel: I Post Daily Gaming, Tutorials, and Guitar Videos: Ohaple
  2. Go to the video manager page on youtube.
  3. Click the drop down box next to your channel trailer
  4. Select "promote"
  5. Choose your budget. For very small channels, I recommend the minimum allowed since Google will sometimes over-serve your ad, giving you a little better value. For larger channels, you will need to select a budget more like $50-$200 to have any noticeable growth. I mostly recommend this for channels with less than 1000 subs, since it will be a better value for you.
  6. Select "Let me choose who sees my ad"
  7. Select 2-3 interests that match closely with your channel. Leave the locations alone (you will want to sort by language, but unless your content is country-specific, you do not want to narrow by nation)
  8. Design your ad. This is important, because this is how it will show up to many viewers. You get three short lines of text, use them carefully to describe your channel and give a reason why that person might want to click. Be careful not to use all caps, cap every word, use exclamation marks, or anything else that wouldn't fit in an essay for school. They will automatically deny the ad for these, since google likes to keep ads looking neat. For mine I put: "The best gaming tutorials Daily gaming and tutorial videos Tips to grow your YouTube channel"
  9. There are two types of ads. The video you made that will show up before other videos with the "skip in 5" button is called in stream. The text and thumbnail that show up in other places is called in display. For your channel, we want to try to focus on in-stream ads, since getting a video in front of your viewers is a great way to promote your video content.
  10. Click accept, then create or sign in to your Google Adwords Campaign
  11. Once you go to the video campaign page after signing in or creating your account, bookmark the page. It can be a little difficult to find if you do not have it bookmarked.
  12. You will see that your campaign is not serving, and is under review. Reviewing for in-display ads usually takes an hour, but in-stream portions may take longer. Nobody will see your ad until it is approved.
  13. Click on "targets" then click on the edit button next to your targeting group
  14. This is the most important part of the process (except for the actual ad content itself)
  15. There are many factors that you can target your audience by. Generally, the more focused you make it, the better response your ad will have, but the lower the views will be. You want to balance the targeting to spend your entire budget and still get it in front of the right people.
  16. On the right side of the screen you will see a real-time preview of some of the stats for your ad. It will tell you how many viewers, estimated cost per view, and distribution between in-stream and in-display ads.
  17. You can figure out if you are being limited by your budget or by your targets by this formula: avg. CPV x Predicted number of views = max daily budget. If your daily budget is below the number you got, then you are in good shape. Keep in mind the estimated views are LESS THAN 500 or LESS THAN 250. I recommend never doing the <250, because this could be 2 views, or 250. You can't be sure either way. With <500 you can feel secure knowing you will get 200-500 views a day.
  18. Onto the targeting: Choose wisely, because you do not want to focus too much. I recommend targeting by 3 factors that are important for your content. This will vary by channel type. I would skip over age and gender unless it is important for your content (like "15 tips for seniors"). "Viewing videos about" and "interested in" are two of the most important ones. This will ensure that your audience will be people already viewing content similar to yours. Placements are specific sites and videos that you want to be placed on. If you have a specific video that is similar to your channel, then you can enter in the url of that to make sure it gets played on that video. You can do it for tons of videos, but it does limit your audience a ton. I also like the content keywords target. Select keywords that people might be searching for that are related to your channel, like "Youtube tips"
  19. Look at the pie chart that shows which type of ad is being played most. You can adjust your bids to change that ratio. Paying more for in-stream ads will make them more common. Paying less makes them less common. You want to put this as low as possible to still burn through your entire budget. $.01-$.04 should be fine, especially in january.
  20. Go to your settings tab in the campaign screen. Put your budget on accelerated if you want. This will server your ad very quickly when the next day comes. This may increase the chances of your ad being over-served (which gives more value). If you do this, be sure to set your ad schedule to start sometime around when you usually post a video. You want your audience to be watching videos around the same time you post them, especially if you do live content like I suggest in my "Thousands of Views" tutorial. Click ad rotation and choose whether you want to optimize for views or for conversions. Choose the language that your channel is in.
  21. Wait for your ad to be approved.
  22. Once it is approved, wait a day, and come back and check the stats on how it ran. On the campaign tab, you can select "columns" and choose different options to see different stats. For our usage, we are interested in subs earned, and views earned. These show the number of views and subs that you got that were a result of your ad.
  23. Go back to your settings, and adjust them if you see anything is not to your liking in the stats.
  24. Let the ad campaign run its course, adjusting as needed, and enjoy the extra growth.

I hope this was helpful to you. It is a bit long-winded, but I wanted to make sure to be complete so you can get through it even if you aren't familiar with the system. Hope you have a great day, and be sure to post any questions below.

I'm gonna try out your method and see how it goes. I tried it prior and paid $10 only to get around 450 views. I did try to pick locations though so that might not have helped much, I didn't realise it would affect it, thought it would actually help more since YouTube's meant to recommend regional stuff as a priority. But needless to say I didn't find it worth it. This time around I'm only paying $5 to play with the settings a bit more, if I get decent value out of that I MIGHT try more lol Originally it was just meant to be a test. Thanks for this article.

Glad to be of some help Andrew. This won't replace natural growth, so is mostly useful only in the first couple hundred subs. I ran the one that I produced in the tutorial, and now that I am at 5k subs, it is not giving as good of a value as it did when I was at 70

Yeah, I reckon you'd have to increase the amount you pay as you grow. It's all an investment, I don't even mind if I don't make it back, even in 6months- 1yr maybe more lol what really annoys me though is that I think my subs have been botting and are being botted, shot from 96 to 107 in less than a few hours, some of the subs seem legit but my avg views haven't increased and so haven't the comments. I think who ever's doing it is "trying" to play it smart by adding them gradually, pisses me off because if I have to make a new account, I'm actually losing views I paid for. $15 is a lot of money for nothing when you're unemployed. Although there is a possibility that AdWords is working (which I doubt) :S I can't see where the subs came from yet. But I'll let you know how this method goes, I might have to play around a few different times. AdWords did say I was narrowing my targets too much but I didn't even have many categories, they were all gaming related, which I'd have thought a good thing since I'm a gaming a channel... lol

I doubt those are botted. Either got natural growth from an unexpected source or the ads are working. The ads do work. Be happy with the growth, and don't automatically assume the worst

lol I assumed the worse cause I only paid $5 this time around and $10 last time so I felt the results were weird. But I contacted Google AdWords support and found out it's all fine. So it has been less than 3-4 days and $5 got me 6000+ views valued at $150. And Google said they will continue to run the ads for me until the 14day period is up. So in other words your guide worked a charm xD

Exactly! This is the over serving I was talking about! I got $300 worth overnight. It doesn't happen to everyone, but it is great when it does

Haha yeah. Now I kind of wish it reeled in a little more subs. But I'm guessing that the 10 or so I got within a few hours came from the ads too. So it's a win win, just wish I could convert more of those views to some form of interaction be it likes or dislikes etc... But I'll be even more happy if the retention rate of the views is a high average, that would be the best feeling knowing that 6000+ people watched the entire thing, even if they didn't sub or comment or anything, the wait is killing me lol. Thanks for the guide man, it really helped.

@ohaple For a small channel like me, 125 subs how much do you think I should make my budget?
Do you have to be a certain age?
Can you pay with Paypal? :D
