youtube monetization inquiries

You can only monetize a cover if Youtube explicitly states it in your account on that particular video. This is from the help page:

You'll know you can share in revenue from a cover song video when you see this message next to the video in your Monetization tab: “Monetize my video. This is my cover of a song written by somebody else. Learn more”

If that appears then you can go ahead and monetize it. Of course it's going to be different...it'll be his version of the song. But just because it's different doesn't mean he can monetize. Only if Youtube invites him to.
