YouTube as a Full-Time Job

Naw, I'm not looking to go full time with YouTube. My full time job pays more than enough for me.

I posed the question originally to find out why some people thought it was viable. From what I've read so far, it's less than 1% that are able to fully support themselves strictly from YouTube. And those that rely on it are making excess amounts of money.

I definitely think its something that can offer you a good wage if you can get to a certain level with it. You could probably make a fairly decent wage from around 30,000 views per day providing you have a decent/good CPM. Of course quitting your job after you just hit 30k views per day would be silly because if you hit a dip and lost some views then you would be struggling, but if you can manage it properly and build up a safety net for if your views go down (good investments or a part time job) then it is something that can give you good money. I know a couple of people on this forum that make more than a good wage from youtube.

But what about long term? Say you can make a decent wage of $80k take home cash a year, which in my city is average pay for medium income. Can you reliably do YouTube for the next 5 years of your life? 10? I won't be retiring for another 35 years myself, and the thought of doing YouTube that long is daunting.

No you can't but some people don't plan on doing 1 job for their whole life so this might be no different. Also I think if you were a youtuber the intention would be to get well over the base rate to maybe at least 50k views per day and then you can save extra in your bank for if your channel dies out. 50k views per day could be £100 per day easily.

$80k is a lot of money , the average wage in the UK is around 25,000 £ I believe (which is prob around 45,000$ correct me if I'm wrong) so if I was ever making $80k per year off youtube I would be making more than enough to live off.

Yeah I hear what you are saying. And someone else mentioned the ability to sell merchandise or get paid for other work through YouTube fame, which will all add up.

$45k a year is a starting salary for uni grads here, but if you are looking to buy a house, settle down, raise a family, then $80k a year isn't even enough for that. Keep in mind you have to keep earning that per annum for the rest of your life, or have your house/car repossessed. And that's what I mean, the amount of daily views required to hit even just $80k seems like a huge amount.

You definitely need a lot more money to live off for where you live then, If I was making £25k per year I'd be able to live (not saying I'd be living a life of luxury but I know many friends who earn around this and live reasonably) 25k per year with a decent - good CPM is probably around 8-15million views per year, so 700k-1.3mil ish views per month. 700k views a month is around 25k views per day I think. That is definitely achievable, there must be many youtubers who get around 25k views per day, its prob closer to 30k because not all are monetized, and you'd need a fairly good CPM too. So yes it may be hard to forge a living but anyone who is getting around 50k views per day (as quite a few are nowadays) should be able to make a good wage out of youtube providing they have a decent CPM.

In 2013 so far, I've been averaging about 800K views a month, and I was partnered about a week into a January. Naturally, alot of my views in January weren't monetized, as there was a week I wasn't partnered, and I did a lot of my video claiming in bursts. I got paid for 372,000 views, which, if Youtube was a 40-hour work week, gave me what would be a little under minimum wage. For my February payment I'm expecting a good deal more, as the CPM increases and more of my views are accounted for. I'm not personally looking into doing Youtube as a career, and look at my videos as a hobby, but if I can end up getting a few grand a month from simply playing video games, that would be incredible, regardless of whether or not it'd be enough to support a family, haha. No doubt it'd be best to not rely on that too much, and try to get a Job IRL also, but YT money no doubt can be a great support.

Good post. So you got 372k monetized views in a week? Also do you know where the majority of your views come from because viewing countries greatly increases/decreases the CPM based on where they are. By the sounds of what your saying about a 40 hour week min wage, that would make your CPM at less than £1 , this should improve as we get further into the year, but it may be low because of where your views come from.

What I was saying is that I was partnered a week into January, so there was a week's worth of views that were just unaccounted for. If I had been partnered all of January, and had all of my videos claimed, I probably would've had maybe 500K-600K monetized views. I'm undergoing a network change as well, which will hopefully bring in some higher CPM, but yeah, my January CPM was pretty low, (Dunno if I can say it specifically, but it was between 1-2$) Most of my views come from the USA, and then Great Britain, and I've got a pretty high Audience Retention, about an average of 4 minutes, so in the later months I hope to get a pretty decent pay. Here's hoping :)

You should definitely get a higher CPM with them stats. What network you partnering with?
