If you change your name via google plus it will change the way it displays, not the way it searches. It may turn up in the search results, but it's not going to effect your url. So for instance my main channel is http://youtube.com/mikekhukuritv .... which I hate. So I changed it to Zesty Mike via google. Although it displays differently I am stuck with that crappy url.

So if you are going to use an old channel and chagne the display name make sure that it is a URL you can live with otherwise it will bug you forever... Like myself =(

Also if lifewithtravis is not taken I think that that would be really good!

If you're going to go with a major name change (such as this) and don't have thousands of subscribers on your current channel, I'd suggest creating a brand new channel

No subscribers, it was just a regular channel to watch and comment.

I like LifewithTravis more than LifeisaRide. Easier to type and read and has a more personal touch to it. If you want to be a big YouTuber, you'll probably want people to connect with you, and you are Travis, not 'a ride.'

Thanks for all the help. So when I make a new accound, my name would be whatever I make the gmail to be? Because it seems to require a first and last name otherwise. And you can't change that without disconnecting from Google+.

your gmail will create your login and default display name.

After creation you will need to go to advanced settings and assign a custom URL for your channel. After that you can go over to G+ and change your display name to whatever you wish.

Yeah I will keep it as it is. The real name feature bugs me but I can see why some use it. but the one you want to use sounds good.
