Work, real life and your channel

I recently started my youtube channel and i'm sure like most of you here i also have a job. I think the general theme of my weekly videos will me about my life and experiences and providing any advice I can on things i've been through (with some hilarity thorwn in for good measure ;))

one topic i have considered discussing a lot is my job. I would never discuss the company in a negative way but i am not sure if even mentioning some things could get me in trouble. I am also unsure about how work would react to my channel... its just a weekly vlog so nothing offensive or discriminative gets put up, but i would imagine it would be seen as 'unprofessional' if you catch my drift...

i was wondering what experiences anyone else had had with this and would you suggest keeping the two completely separate or are you quite open about both?

Sometimes I think about that... I post something on one of my channels, and it offends everybody. Next thing you know, nobody wants to hire me, and then finally I'm a hobo living in my parents basement for the rest of my life.

I'd think it would be okay as long as you don't bring up the company specifically, and as long as you don't say anything, at all, bad about the company.

Real life just gets in the way of my YouTubing :P I would be careful with talking about your job though, depending on where you work they might get very sensitive about confidentiality etc.

I don't bring up my job specifically. I did do a video on how to treat your workplace because of the messy people at my work here but it's tricky. It's not the interenet, it's not secret and it's a grey area as to if an employer can use it against you. It's like posting negative stuff on your public facebook. I would avoid it if at all possible.

yeah i'm thinking about avoiding the topic all together. of course i would never mention names, or reference anything specific to do with the company. However my fear is that me thinking i'm saying something light hearted could be taken the wrong way if seen by the wrong person... thanks for tip though!

Well, your personal life is all separate from work, so I think you could say what you like as long as you're not bad mouthing anyone :)

I have also thought a lot about this. I think as long as your employer understands that you have a life outside of your work that is separate and important to you, you should be fine. Again though, I wouldn't go bashing the job or saying anything that could be taken as negative towards the company. Basically, just use common sense. Keep up the good work! I enjoy the videos!

Hey there :)
I am still a student, but I can imagine that that's quite an uncomfortable situation.
My advice would be: Avoid talking about your work. As long as nothing very special happens that you want to talk about very badly I would just ignore that topic. There are so many things you could talk about and if you avoid this topic you won't have to be afraid of any consequences.
