Gaining a lot more views and subscribers within 2 years is very do-able if you believe in yourself. Gotta give that Jimmy a chance. At least he tried. Some people would wanna start with a network before moving to another network once their channels grow. Some would work hard and succeed for their future. Some would work hard and fail. But why not give yourself a chance?
But then again, a lot of big youtubers didn't even aim to "succeed" on Youtube. They did all that as hobbies so we can't really compare with real jobs / work times. It could be the same for those who joined the network. Getting some few bucks for a hobby is better than nothing. Good bonus. But that would also depend on other factors. Example, in my case, with Youtube basic partnership, I couldn't even monetize a lot of videos that gave me the most views because I needed to provide proofs that were pending for months (and not instantly like my friends). So in my case, being in a Network is better (60/40 in my contract) considering that I believe in myself that my channel will grow (but not explode). But I still do things as hobbies on free times, not stressing myself over such thing, not depending on it. At the end, I LOSE NOTHING. All profits anyway. It will of course always suck if we could have earned more but when we signed a contract, we had to expect such possibility to happen. It's just sad for those who worked so hard just to get nowhere like it's not even a relaxing hobby for them. Now THEY lose something: wasting their times in life not having fun on free times. Indeed they should have gone find a job instead. If we're not too much of a greedy mofo on our hobbies, there are positive sides to it.
But my friends who have no problem with monetization (no pending, etc) earned enough with just being in basic Youtube partnership alone. No need to join a 50/50 network at all...
