Why the new layout doesn't matter

The new layout will be nice but i have to admit banners are alot easier to make than backgrounds so graphic designers on youtube will probably will have to spend more time making channel trailors or intros

I guess a plus side is that more people will be looking for banners since they'll be open to everyone. So at least there should be some gain in that area and not just an all out loss.

I think you all are overly-concerned about the new layout, thinking it will hurt your viewership or something. In reality, your videos are all that matter, and they should speak for themselves. If not being able to have a background will ruin your channel, I'm sorry but you're doing it wrong.

What the last layout change did

- They removed friends and made them contacts. And then got rid of the contacts tab. Essentially, casual you tubers might not even be able to find their own contact lists. It took me clicking through every link on my page to do so.

- Created issues with the subscriber module. Subscribers of various channel claiming they are not receiving videos from channels they are subscribed too = less views for it's creators. I still hear it to this day but it was even more prevalent when they initially got rid of the retro Youtube layout in March, 2012.

- They made subscribers other subscribers lists impossible to find. You can say ''don't spam anyways'' but you can also say that to literally 95% of people to receive my well researched invites, checked out my music, thanked me for it and then became my subscribers until this very day.

- Made commenting less effective. It's sloppy and doesn't allow for users to properly view comments below. I shouldn't have to click ''show more'' over and over again to read my/or some other channels comments.

- Removed the award system. Ex. If I posted a new video and picked up 300 views within two days (which I used to do) I'd appear on on the most viewed today list in the music session. This was the only decent way to find smaller channels to listen to and I'm sure it brought a few extra views to my page as well.

These changes only did one thing; made it easier for big channels to grow and made it even harder for smaller channels to do the same.

I don't know ''when'' this change was implemented... but when a new user signs up to the site they're literally hit with a bunch of popular channels to subscribe to; knowing full well a new user might just sub them all to get through the process easier - inflating their numbers even more.

Every new lay out, I'm to assume is meant to hurt small channels and help bigger you tube partners unless they finally give us something to work with with these changes... which they won't because they make more money this way.

I'm not complaining, either... I work with the changes but they're BS.

Also, before I end this... I knew while writing this - that this comment probably came from one of the big youtubers on this site and I was exactly right. These changes don't hurt guys like you.

Wow. When you lay it all out like that, just wow. I realised they have changed a lot, but it wasn't until you put it all together that it really sinks in how all these 'small' changes have really impacted content creators.

I see where you're coming from, and you are right that bigger YouTubers will agree with me, but the reason is not that the layout benefits us more. All big youtubers (and I wouldn't even consider myself big, but getting there) have a completely different mindset about YouTube, one I never see in smaller channels. This is because: 1. Bigger channels achieve this mindset when they realize just the amount of work and dedication must go into videos, and 2. If someone achieves this mindset while they are small, they will very quickly become successful. The reason I bring this up is that your success on YouTube has nothing to do with the layout, but most people blame their misfortunes on YouTube. I get virtually no subscribers from suggestions by youtube, and I know that bigger YouTubers get theirs pretty much solely from their videos. To say that the layouts are just to benefit larger channels is absurd; YouTube would benefit the most from having as many large channels as possible, not just a few big ones that get a bit bigger.

Fair enough. I agree that your not the elite of the elite in terms of subs views. Though, from my perspective... I'd be doing extremely well off with 9 million views spread across my videos and it would open the door for a lot of opportunities, no doubt. I do give you props for what you've achieved by the way.

This is fundamentally true. I'm sure big youtubers put hard work in but that largely depends on the genre. I'm not trying to offend anyone here so I won't speak specifically on what genres; but there's certain ''big channels'' that aren't doing anything special at all. They may have at one point; but for the most part, they simply have an already established fanbase that will push their work out for them. I wish I could take the gloves off and break it down for you but I'm new here and would rather settle in; but maybe in some way you can understand me on this point.

Secondly, there are channels in virtually every genre that have just as great as quality as popular you tubers but will never break into the ''mainstream'' and it has nothing to do with the quality of their material. I mean, you could send me one of your videos right now, I could upload it to my channel and it would do no more then a thousand views. Conversely, take the same video and put it onto a huge channel and you can consider it a 100K + hit on the spot. It wouldn't change the quality of the video one bit.

Maybe part of your success are your tactics to create a buzz and I can respect that - however, my argument is that the youtube layout changes DID hurt smaller channels. I know this because it DIRECTLY effected mine. I did manage to improve my counts in the long run but I had to hustle significantly harder to do so. Thus, it's a negative.

If someone achieves this mindset while they are small, they will very quickly become successful. The reason I bring this up is that your success on YouTube has nothing to do with the layout, but most people blame their misfortunes on YouTube.

I do agree that your background image in the larger scheme of things, isn't what you need to worry about and your success is definitely not solely determined by the youtube layout... but the layout changes directly effected my channel at the time for the reasons I stated above. There is no doubt about it.

I get virtually no subscribers from suggestions by youtube, and I know that bigger YouTubers get theirs pretty much solely from their videos.

That's because youtube broke it/made it less effective in their updates.

To say that the layouts are just to benefit larger channels is absurd; YouTube would benefit the most from having as many large channels as possible, not just a few big ones that get a bit bigger.

This is partially incorrect. You can only have so many ''popular'' channels before the market becomes over saturated. It's the same reason why we all can't be popular you tubers with popular channels.

Youtube has made it harder for the smaller guy to get their name out there - while bombarding new sign ups with descriptions lists of popular/popular relevant users with pre approved submission clicks. They have enough popular YT'bers out there - they want more people watching those guys that make them money, then some joe schmoe like me without adds on his video make money for their advertisers.

It's simple what's going on here. I can't find new youtube channels without signing up to sites like these or blindly searching random terms in a search bar.

As far as my channel is concerned? I never intend to pull in those kind of views. At the same time - I feel youtube should have more venues open to make it possible to network on their site and for me to find other people to work with. Let me search users by genre, subscriber counts and views. It's simple but it probably won't happen. They want users finding the channels that make them the most money.
