Why does some big YouTubers not upload in 1080p?

I am going to do a video in 1080p and compare time/quality and if the quality is a LOT better and does not take too much time will change.

It's definitely the upload/ processing time associated with a 1080 file. They're much larger than 720 files, and therefore take forever to upload on a slow connection. You might have seen me complaining about this around on the forums; but i have an atrocious internet connection. I tend to upload in the morning and go about my day, come back hours later and it's still uploading. If I was doing YouTube full time or uploading on a daily basis like some of these guys, that would become infuriating.

The majority of people who watch videos watch them in the default setting which is normally around 360-480p. I used to record and upload in 1080p and even record at 20mbps, but realised it's just not worth it at all due to YouTube's compression, but I still did 1080P for a while after that but stopped a good few months ago. My GTA IV videos are actually still at 1080P due to consistency reasons when editing, but I export them at 5 mbps, the recommendation for 720p, not a single person who has viewed it has mentioned anything about it, because they probably don't even watch it above 480P. I've only ever had 2 complaints about videos and quality, none of them were resolution related. If people want to watch games in 1080P I suggest they watch sites like GameSpot or IGN or look up the games from their official publisher and just stick to gameplay footage.
I also save more HDD space and bandwidth. I play in 1080p but record in 720p at 7mbps and upload in 720P at 5mbps, I don't even do my thumbnails in 1080P anymore. Mark's videos can be dark sometimes but it's because he doesn't change the brightness of the video or the game and by the time it gets on YouTube, it's compressed to a point where it's messed up. 720P alone is a luxury that we're lucky to get from Let's Players. If you want to upload in 1080P to give "quality" to your viewers do it, but it's practically a waste with the current state of internet infrastructures throughout the world. I don't even watch videos in anything above 480P unless it's another site using its own video player, like GameSpot and that's only for me to see new release games so I can see the gameplay in better quality, but even then sometimes I just view it on YouTube. When I watch a video, I just want to click on it and let it play no fussing around.
But wouldn't they have enough money to get a good internet connection?
I have enough money to pay for cable (cable and ADSL2+ in Australia are pretty much the same price, in fact some cable packages are cheaper than ADSL2+ via differnet ISPs), but due to the way the wiring is done I can't and the wires I need can't be put in because my dad doesn't want them from the post to the roof, that's a different story though. You also have to keep in mind some of them upload multiple videos per day, so they need to conserve bandwidth as much as possible so that all the videos they upload are uploaded and processed within the day. Let's not forget that browsers have extremely terrible bandwidth management when it comes to YouTube since it eats all your upstream bandwidth, rendering it almost impossible to browse the web, this is why I upload while I'm sleeping, otherwise I can't use the net.
Mark also bought a new PC a few weeks-month ago, from what I saw in the specs he has a beast and a half and is more than capable of rendering 1080P videos and much higher for a good 5-7 years. In fact for what he's doing with his system, the parts are actually a little bit overkill, but only a little bit.

Speaking of internet connections, you have to factor that this goes both ways, a large majority of people have crap net, as much as we'd like to believe otherwise. This factors into 1 of the reasons people watch the video in its default resolution, less buffer time and you can watch the video smoothly. This also applies to the many millions who watch videos off their phones and tablets or portable devices via WiFi/3G/4G. YouTube offers 144-108op and higher for these reasons. Also some people might have a similar connection to you but might not get the same speeds.

99.99% of YouTube viewers don't watch in 1080p anyway, because like mentioned earlier, internet connections around the world vary in speeds and it can take 5 times as long to watch one video. Plus there are ALOT of games, especially Indie Games like Mark plays, that are only playable in 720p or LESS. Meaning you already have to stretch out your footage to 720p, and going all the way to 1080p is going to make the quality worse.

I have the capabilities to upload in 1080p but I don't think that it's worth it in my opinion.[DOUBLEPOST=1395657364,1395657260][/DOUBLEPOST]

THIS paired with the fact that Abbott killed off the NBN are pretty much the main reason that any Australian YouTuber is limited when it comes to quick and easy uploads. Like I've seen setup videos or Q&A's where they've said that "A normal upload takes about 5-10 minutes" which is a speed all of us would DREAM for here.

It isn't entirely killed off, they put it on hold or some crap like that, at least I read a recent article about it not being canned so there was still hope, unless that changed recently. Either way, even if we had NBN, I wouldn't upload in 1080P for the HDD space, but I would definitely be on Twitch streaming if we had NBN. They will need to really push to implement it soon though, current gen is reaching more and more households and GameInformer Aus mentioned in an article that a large majority of Australia's population are gamers. Due to the new share and stream functionalities more and more people will be using the net for this kind of thing. Then you got people who are more and more getting buying services like Flex and Foxtel Presto. Services like that don't do as well in Aus if you're streaming it. If they don't push for NBN people are just gonna get p****d, Australia is already expensive enough as it is, at this rate more and more Aussies are gonna end up moving to different countries. It's what I want to do, I'll miss it heaps but living in Aus is just starting to get ridiculous. We're a 1st world country and still have a fairly poor infrastructure compared to 3rd world countries. They still haven't even got 4G working all around Melbourne, it only works properly in the city. I have to say, bit off topic, I hope Abott doesn't go with his original plan for the whole 4G infrastructure what is meant to be our new net lol but in a way... it would kind of be faster than what we have now :/

The main appeal of the NBN network (FTTH) has been killed off. They're going to do Fiber to the Node crap, which is going to increase speeds a bit but were going to be no where near the rest of the world. I plan to move to America before I turn 25, simply because I don't think I'm going to be able to afford to live here by myself, and staying with my parents or moving in with a friend doesn't really appeal to me as an adult.

Damn it, I knew they were thinking of FTTN but didn't think they were dumb enough to try it. I guess it's better than nothing. Also good luck with that. Currently most of the younger generation in Australia are pretty screwed, due to living expenses and unemployment rates on the rise. By Younger, I mean anyone under the age of 30 is currently in a struggle unless they've been working since 16 and saving every $ or have rich parents. You'll need to be earning 6 figures by the time you're 20 if you want out by 25 or secure a job overseas and have enough money to move there. I anticipate within the next 5-10 years, more and more Aussie kids will be stuck at home until they're 30. It's probably best for more students to do VCAL instead of VCE now days too. I think we derailed this, so YouTubers don't upload stuff in 1080p because they also want to not do it in 1080p.... saved it.

So close to derailment.. 1080p is meh. 720p is good. *bands head on keyboard*

Until PewDiePie moved to the UK it took him 8 hours to upload a video. The internet he has now is 8 down and 1.10 up which is still s**t. You don't see him complaining
