Why does some big YouTubers not upload in 1080p?

A huge determining factor in what quality to upload is dependent on the YouTuber's machine he or she is rendering on and the bandwidth for their connectivity. I used to only upload in 720 when it would take about an hour to render a 5 minute video at that speed. Once I upgrade my machine it takes about 10 minutes for the same clip at that speed so I up'ed my quality to 1080 and still get the render out in about 20 minutes.

1080p takes a lot more time to render than 720p. The upscale from 1280x720 to 1920x1080 is a huge jump.

2016 and this thread is still relevant.

US internet speeds are still junk.

I started out in 720p back in the day and upped to 1080p later. Internet speed was a concern, and my PC really did not like to render 1080p in a timely fashion either. Editing was fine though. Once I got a new rig and faster internet I went to 1080p and never looked back.
