Think about the way most people view social media...they flip past whatever is in whatever feed they're looking at within seconds. Setting up a premise, getting into anything even slightly deep or complicated...that doesn't give you a lot of time to gain attention. Also, a lot of social feeds don't automatically turn on the sound for videos unless you ask for it, so if you're talking at a camera, that's....not going to get your attention in a casual view.
People from all over the world can understand a watermelon being dropped on something. It's quick, it's universal, it's funny (somewhat), and it doesn't require the sound to be on. So weird, visual things are going to gain a lot of quick views because people can watch them easily without having to pay too much attention, I think.
