Why do subscribers come in waves?

There might be multiple dark magic sources at work here but one thing I did notice was that whenever I was lucky enough that YouTube showed one of my videos on the launch day of another cool video as related - or next to a very famous one at a later stage - subs kept coming.

Or maybe people spotted a cool comment you made on one of the videos. Or someone with great influence recommended you :)

It's like views, they can come in waves too if someone shares one of your videos. Over the weekend my "B17 Texas Raiders" video got shared on their Facebook, yielding 300-400 views over normal for the day. Subscribers are gained in a similar fashion. People end up finding your channel trough a share (could be a video share on a website or a shout out. In 2014 I gained 99 subscribers in a week once due to a shoutout. My highest gain in 2015 has been 44 in a week).

I think it's a mix of promoting as well as youtube algorithm as someone mentioned above. Sometimes I havent even promoted and I get a bunch of subs all at once,...

I've noticed I get subs right after I post a new video. I haven't uploaded anything in 3 weeks and my channel completely stalled about 2 weeks ago, no growth whatsoever. Maybe there's some sort of algorithm where if you're more active your videos show up more in relevant searches? I have no idea, but that's the trend I normally see. The first few days after I post a vid (even if I don't advertise) gets activity then it dies.

Lots of things come in waves on YouTube, I've even found that dislikes always seem to come in groups. I think since a lot of videos are shared through social media, it makes sense that things tend to cluster as people discover and share them. Then when one group gets burned through, it goes into a lull for a little while.

Pretty sure that this can be a factor, yes. One person shares it on Facebook in a negative way and suddenly his friends will also dislike it. Same the other way round. "Influencers" :)
