After a year and a half of lurking here, I was waiting for a good topic to push me to make an account and interact. Well this is the perfect thread.
I just want preface what I am about to say with that I agree with a lot of what people are saying about Gaming channels lacking creativity, originality and interesting content. However, as it has been stated, there are many different types of gaming content on YT. There is Gaming News, Tips and Tricks, LetsPlays, Commentary, Trolling/Pranks, Mod and Server Showcasing, Podcast, Competitive Gaming and so on and so forth. Some of that content takes a greater effort and creative process than others. So If anyone would care to indulge me I'd also like to propose something that doesn't get talked about much whether it be on these forums or on YouTube itself as well as give some insight as to why I’m here.
I've been watching the Gaming Community on YouTube since 2009. The Idea to create my own channel never occurred to me until late 2012. No one in the Gaming Community was making content that I wanted to see. No one was discussing certain topics or playing certain games I wanted to see. When it came to personality all I cared about is that the person was at least a decent speaker and made me feel like he/she was talking "with me" rather than "at me".
In 2013 I was set on creating my own channel and I started writing down all my Ideas. I was buying software, researching how to grow, what to do, what not do, what the TOS were, how I could post game footage and just about everything you needed to know when it came to getting yourself involved on YouTube as a gamer. However the more I looked into YouTube the more I saw how bad the Gaming Community was.
One of the main reasons why I think the Gaming Community is looked down on by other Genre's on YouTube and People and why I think even YouTube doesn't like the Gaming Scene is for how the Gaming Community has treated YouTube. I won't mention any names or call out anyone but there was a lot of things people were using to grow their audiences. What I mean is that people were gaming the algorithm which is against YouTube’s TOS.
Back in 2011 a lot of Gaming Channels were taking the front page of YouTube by manipulating the algorithm. They were doing this by using FavLikeSub giveaways mostly. Mis-categorizing and Bumping videos in Sub Boxes were a huge thing and Misleading Thumbnails and Titles were starting to really get out of hand as well. I remember that there was these two YouTubers who were false flagging others when those people would call foul of them manipulating the system to get their content out. Botting was also getting a lot of attention at that time. It just got really ugly.
In 2012 and 2013 I remember checking Social Blade and you would be able to tell who was botting their subs and views. I would check Social Blade at least once a week to research everything about statistics and YouTube’s algorithm. I found that Gaming Channels were consistently apart of the Top 10 botters. I remember one Quick Scoping Channel botted to 24,000 subscribers in a single day.
Now in 2014 gaming channels are obviously finding new ways to get their audiences since YouTube has changed their system and algorithm over the years. Now it is all about spamming tags in the description, using irrelevant tags in their tag descriptions, putting tags in their closed captions and excessively titling their videos. Fake Giveaways are now taking place and people have been basically plagiarizing others content just through paraphrasing and tag set up of each other.
So it is like people have been saying. Gaming on YouTube doesn’t take a lot of effort in most cases. You don’t need much but capture software, a decent mic, editing program, a voice to talk and little to no knowledge about what you are talking about. If you have that and know how to game the system, that is all you need or at least thats how a lot of YouTube Gaming Channels view YouTube now.
The lack of creativity, effort, originality, entertainment value and interest in their content plus the will for those to violate YouTube’s TOS and Guidelines by using shady and unfair tactics to get big on YouTube is why I think the Gaming Scene is so frowned upon. It’s just been really nasty strong arming from the Gaming Community and when channels get called out for all those tactics and rule breaking their only response/excuse is that other/bigger YouTuber's do it and get away with it.
All this has made me question whether or not I should create my own channel. Half of me says not to and the other half says just go for it. I fear that before I get noticed most of my content will end up plagiarized and I won’t get the chance to grow. Seriously, I've got many original and creative ideas for gaming videos but based on how I've seen how the Gaming Community treats each other it is not a group I want to become a part of.
