I think for many, it's an ego thing. I get the impression that a lot of younger YouTubers start YouTube because some of their classmates do it and they treat their YouTube subcount in the exact same way as they do their facebook "friends" They just want as many YT "subs" and facebook "friends" as possible to compete with their classmates - They do friend4friend on facebook, and so they do sub4sub on YouTube.
They're not interested in views so much because views are abstract whereas a sub equates to a person, a "fan" - They figure that a large sub count will impress people IRL who aren't familiar with how YouTube works. It's just an ego thing but a complete waste of time.
