Why bother hiding subscribers?

I have spoken about this to other youtube friends briefly but I definitely think it's something that at least effects me to a degree.

Basically, I think that when a new viewer comes onto your channel for the first time, their opinion of your content, and your channel as a whole has the potential to be influenced by that (mostly) insignificant number next to your subscribe button. For instance, if you go onto a channel with 100,000+ subscribers, you have a tendency to believe that this person must be doing something right, or that their content must be at least some kind of decent quality for them to attain that many subscribers.

That is why I think it's an option to begin with, and why people tend to turn it off more when they have a lower subscriber count.

Ultimately, it's pretty easy to tell how many subscribers someone has (Or at least active subscribers) by looking at their most recent videos and the views that they pull in. So if you are looking to do collaborations you can always use Socialblade to take a look at their monthly views etc before you make a decision

Idk, most content creators and viewers that I've talk too always say that they don't like it. Content creator just don't want to be apart of something if they are not sure that they can grow. And viewers always felt that the Youtuber is "hiding" something.

Maybe they're insecure about their subscriber count or just don't care about subscribers.
And some people make videos for fun and don't really care about subscribers.

I completely agree with you!

I have been on a couple Youtube channels and at 1st they showed how many subscribers they have then all of the sudden the next time i go on there Youtube channel they hidden the amount of subscribers they have(even in about page) which is stupid!

Youtube should get rid the option to hide the amount of subs they have(on Youtube channels)now!

I will NEVER hide the amount of subscribers i have on Youtube!

Hiding the sub count would have a psychological effect depending on the views you get. If a YouTuber sees a 20 sub channel video rack up 200 views, they would assume you would have forty. It's all based on estimation.

Obviously no one likes to be "tricked".

From the viewers that I've personally talked too. I've always been told that they would rather see a number rather than hiding it. As long as the channel as good content and good amount of content they are happy. I guess that's not everyone though. :)
Yes, reasons why someone may subscribe are all relative. Your best bet is to find the things that the majority of viewers look at when subscribing, and follow those criteria. However, I do agree having a lot of quality content on your channel is probably the best way because it gives you channel authority; you seem like your the best at whatever your channel is focused on!

I've always just assumed that folks did that in hopes of giving their channel a chance with viewers who wouldn't pay attention to a low sub count.

I don't know about everyone else but for me I feel that it's more personal and creates a sense of the viewer creating their own opinion of my content vs an irrelevant number telling them "Yes this person/content is cool enough" or "not to subscribe since i'm not Jenna Marbles huge". I want to understand they're more than a number also. To me it seems kinda like cattle whenever I go on someones page and I just see I'm one little number out of hundreds or even millions lol. That's just me though.
