Where are people getting background music? Copyright?

So in a lot of my favorite youtubers videos, they have really nice background elevator piano type music. I'm not really sure where they are getting it but i'm too scared to use any kind of music that didn't come with imovie because i dont want to get a strike for copyright!! So how exactly do people find all these great, gentle piano tracks to back up their video?

I'd be glad to make something for you

i was lucky with the music for my outro a friend of mine put me in touch with someone he knows who makes some awesome music and he has let me use his music free even tho some of them are under record labels

Well here it goes with the shameless self-promotion..
We run RoyalTrax (http://youtube.com/royaltrax) and we promote fantastic underground electronic dance music.
All uploads we now post have written permission attached (a screenshot) to not only use the music in YouTube videos Royalty-Free but also to enable advertisements on said videos.
We are the only channel that does this, we honestly take all the work and worry out of Royalty-Free Music.

or they change the pitch of the song so the little machine doesn't pick it up.

Is this certain or just hear say? I'd be interested in learning more about this. We've had trouble with using other peoples music in the past, once even after getting written permission from the recording artist but when the video went viral within an hour the record company got word from that "little machine" and had our video taken down.

Finding good copyright free music is always a challenge and it makes all the difference in your video. It would be awesome if you really could just change the pitch of a song to use it lol

No for real, their machine or whatever it is picks up the exact wave form of the popular songs entered into a database, when you change the pitch it's now a different waveform. I'm not sure how MUCH you have to change it, but have you ever wondered why so many teens who do the stop motion lip syncing videos are lip syncing to songs sped up and higher? That's why, it keeps it from getting recognized by their software.

It was back in 07 and 08 before everyone could get monetized. I know I used a japaesne song in my newest video and Japan did not strike it and that one was monitzied
