I have a nice analogy for this...Your videos are a commercial for a product. Now it's cool when people watch (View) your commericial; it makes you feel good, but it doesn't really mean anything unless people buy (Subscribe) the product you were advertising (your channel). That's how I kind of think about it.
If you are interested mainly in the revenue - views are more important but if you want these view numbers to be more or less stable and to constantly increase (not just some erratic picks here and there) you must take special care of your subscribers too - upload more or less consistent quality and content videos. YouTube relies on the subscribers (and viewers in general) reactions to judge how valuable is your channel and if it makes sense to propagate it further.
