What is your "tagging" technique?

First off, hello! This is my first post on yttalk and so far it seems like a great forum!

Anyway, I really want to know what your video tagging strategies are that seem to work the best. I've been experimenting a looooooooot over the past few weeks and I think I've narrowed it down, but what works best for you? Single words? Phrases? Both? Relevant? Irrelevant? Max out your tags?

I've heard tons of mixed feelings with the "correct" way to tag your videos, so I want to hear how you do it!

I hope you people are as helpful as you seem :)
 
I tag things that are relevant to my video. Adding tags that are irrelevant may not help you at all. I also do both single words, and phrases as I'm not sure exactly which ones work better haha. So I just be safe than sorry.
 
KGATV Thanks for the fast reply! So for example, if I had a video of someone skimboarding and doing a cool air or trick or whatever, how would you best tag the video?

Umm.. Well I don't know much about surfing, so...

Surfing, Surf, Water, Ocean, Sport, wave, any other surfing related stuff, trick names, etc.
I don't know haha. I know very little about surfing
 
You can get away with tagging things if you make a comedy video and you make something that is obviously a joke. It can be like an Easter Egg that actually serves you. For example, if your last three tags are "Sex, drugs, and rock and roll," people will think that's a joke. But YouTube will still count those as tags, so you'll get people searching.

Warning: If you do do this, be prepared for angry people who are actually searching for those things and you don't match that. Also, don't do the same joke ones again. That'll make people think you're trying to cheat the system.
 
KGATV just hit the nail right on the head. Tag every single thing you can think of that is still relevant to your video. Both phrases and single words will work well. A lot of times if you have irrelevant tags people will dislike the video because it is deceiving. Good lil mate!
 
KGATV That actually helped a lot. So mostly like the sport itself, trick names, and genre? What about like extra stuff like "surfing 2013" "surfing montage" "best surfing" Etc.. Would you add stuff like that too? How many tags do you usually add?
