What is best free software to make thumbnails with?

Photoshop CS2 is free, if you know how to get to that page. It's from the official Adobe website, so don't worry about it being a virus. Besides that, GIMP is another good one.

Tried Gimp, too difficult for me, I now use PicMonkey and couldn't be happier. It is so easy and I haven't really needed the paid features for anything. You can check out my channel, all my graphics from thumbnails to channel header are made there.

Gimp is a great software it use, and as many people said you can use a free trial Photoshop (30 days).

There is a bit of a learning curve for GIMP(Heck, I've been using it for about 4 years now and I STILL haven't mastered it), but it can do just about everything Photoshop can.

By the way, don't get 2.8, get an older version like 2.6. The new one corrupts your files.
