What is a "good" audience retention rate?

I have around a 30% retention, but I think it's best to have ~50%. I've optimized them more, cutting out dead time, which I've seen a trend upwards. I think my most viewed video has a retention of ~50%.

It's all about keeping the audience. Silence is powerful, but many times it's not used correctly (i.e. cut that dead air!).

It's hard to say what's a good retention rate (aside from just saying 100%), but if you have a lot of videos you can get an idea of what's typical for you and go from there. If you're getting the views you're getting the ad revenue. One thing that a low retention rate can tell you is if your video is misleading people based on the title and/or thumbnail, if they expect one thing and bail quickly you might want to make your thumbnail or title more accurate!

At DevFactor, average audience retention on newer videos is ~45% - while older videos are ~35%.

Based on the technical nature of our content, it is understandable that few viewers see the videos through from start to finish.
But some factors that seem to have improved audience retention are: hooks, elimination of fat (cutting out slow parts), and improving voice over quality.
Also, audience retention from non-YouTube traffic sources (Reddit, Twitter) has been killer. Redditors don't have large attention spans.

Like others have suggested, tight editing with no dead space is the way to keep your audience retention rates up! My audience retention is 56% lifetime and 58% in the last 365 days. I'm pretty happy with it, though I wouldn't be opposed to an increase.

I am currently at 5%. When I hit double digits I will be in business I think. I guess I come off too offensive in the first few moments of my videos because nobody sticks around. I tried watching my own videos but its too boring so I just surf youtube in hopes somebody will stomach my content because making it was enough for me. Nobody said I had to watch it lol.

I would also like to know what kind of channel do you guys have. I've heard that vlog channels are usually less. And Gaming channels are a little higher. So let me know what category your videos/channel is in and what your retention rate is!

How do you check this out, from what I can tell mine looks very low, which is freaking me out a little
It's in the analytics section when you're in Video Manager.... it's at the bottom.... and yours can't be that low! I always watch your vids to the finish and it's pretty hard to get me to laugh and yours usually do... I'm sure you're fine ;) haha...
