For whatever reason, people have a tendency to believe that anyone who is accused of anything is guilty, probably because much of the time they are. Rape cases are no exception. If 9 out of 10 rape accusations are valid, the people are just conditioned to know that the high likelihood is that she is telling the truth, so they tend to give her the benefit of the doubt. The problem with simply taking a woman's (or anyone's) word for it is that 1 time out of that 10 (approximately) the guy is going to be completely innocent and have his reputation tarnished forever. This is why 'innocent until proven guilty' is so important. The accusation itself can ruin a person's life, even after they are cleared, because people will still associate that person with the rape and maybe even still think they were guilty.and I suspect that the people who do believe, somehow WANT to believe it.
For example, until a couple years ago whenever I heard about the "central park jogger" case (late 80s), I remembered it as 'those boys who raped that girl in Central Park'. Upon reading up on it I found out that those boys were cleared years later when someone else fessed up to the charges. I had no idea. There was nowhere near the media coverage of their exoneration compared to the original story, apparently, and I missed it. So for all those years I thought that people who did nothing wrong were guilty of rape.
Innocent until proven guilty.
