The future of YouTube is discouraging...

Since I have not monetized any of my videos in the past 2 weeks, they have doubled in views and I got triple the amount of subscribers. WTH man. Was monetization holding my channel back?!?

It's possible. I've heard a tip somewhere that you shouldn't monetize before you have a relatively stable fan base as it may turn people away from a channel.

You should merely be using YouTube as one platform to build your brand. If you do it right, you won't have to worry about YouTube. Take a look at Logan Paul. If he was banned on YouTube all of his fans would follow him wherever he goes.

You're not wrong. but it's not JUST about the money aspect. It's the fact that people have to censor themselves...

I think that here is the problem. Small channels have to censor themselves but big channels can upload whatever they want. Lets face it - if Logan Paul video did not become a public issue it would have been still running at the top of YouTube recommended videos and being watched by millions of kids.
The matter of fact is that YT is badly broken and needs urgent fixing. If this fixing is YT being shut down so let it be. At least than we'll have a real chance for some much better video sharing platform(s) to emerge.

Here is an interesting article for the incoming big troubles for YT (and Facebook) from The Guardian:

A lot has changed in this past year. You have to watch what you do and say and it doesn’t really matter if you put an age restriction warning. Not that I was planning on doing anything bad! Also the whole adpocalypse thing :( I want to do YouTube for fun, but I would be lying if I said that I wouldn’t like to be paid to be a content creator. It feels like the more time passes, the more that “dream” (I guess you could call it) is out of reach. It sucks. Anyone feel the same?

honestly i feel i was working on my channel almost hit 10000 which used to be the views you needed to apply for ads!! than bam they changed it where i need 1000 subs i feel like ill get a 1000 subs and they will just make a new rule which will make it harder honestly youtube is trainwreck right now and if they don't listen to the community a new platform will appear and people will jump ship just like they did from myspace to facebook!! i recommend using affiliate links related to your content and sell merch cause adsense is s**t anyways!!

Yes, I feel the same way! They keep moving the bar, and it's discouraging.

It can be very discouraging, I just pay attention to the money part, but it would be nice to get some money to make more content. I put a lot of money in my videos and effort and I probably won’t ever anything from it but I try to just think about the people who are watching and the people who told me my videos make them and help them with getting bullied.

Keep your head up it's not easy.
