Swearing in Videos Bad?

As long as the words are used sensibly, it is fine. Powerful words can really add to a video if used with the correct timing and context.

Depends on the target audience and the content of the video, really.

As an example for video games, I would find swearing in a game like The Walking Dead a lot more appropriate than swearing in a Mario game. When it comes to swearing in commentary of games that don't use swearing, I will either censor it out or leave a warning.

Eh... I don't think it's too bad, but then again I grew up with my mother. Like, every other word is a swear with her. She says every possible swear word you could think of, at least ten times a day.

I mean, those who swear won't be attracting any soccer moms or anything. That's the only possible downside I could see, but at the same time that might be a positive. *scratches arm*

Err... Yeah, as long as it's not used too much, etc, etc it should be fine.

To me it's like... I can tell when someone is doing it because they think it makes them sound cool or they have a highly limited vocabulary, and if it makes you sound either unintelligent, or like you're convinced you somehow are being "edgy" by doing it, I notice it and it bugs me. But when it sounds like you are intelligent, and it's just part of how you express yourself and it's not excessive, it doesn't bother me a bit.

I think it depends on the content creator. Sinbad and Bill Cosby had some amazing stand-up back in the day. The f**k if Louis C.K. could get away with that (and I wouldn't want him to try)

Having swear words in your videos will limit the audience, whereas having no swear words can't hurt. Yes, some of the most popular YouTubers do swear, but some of the most popular ones don't swear at all! And swearing can limit the types of endorsements and deals you'll get later. No one is going to sell kids' stuff on a channel with swearing.

They're just f*****g words, people who are bothered by them should probably learn to worry about real issues and not minor variations in language.

I'm happy I could hear that from you of all people. I love your videos lol.

Also I appreciate everyone else's response since I can't quote every single one of you I have read them all.

I swear mainly out of shock (like "Oh s**t!") or anger (What the f**k!) or whatever the case. I don't use it as like an adjective like "Yeah this is a great f*****g game" where it's not needed. I may slip up occasionally or if the video is intended to be more comedic it may come out more but I dont use it for shock value because if I wanted that i'd just post a screen shot of my nuts over a part of the video. I just took issue with that someone was telling me that I basically would only attract a very tiny amount of people because people got kids.

I've never in my life seen anyone watch any YouTube video that could possibly have any type of swearing or anything in front of children anyway. The same note goes to something like Scarface, or the Sopranos, or Game of Thrones you don't watch that content in front of your kids so why is it an issue? Those are still highly acclaimed and god forbid Joe Pesci not swear in the movie GoodFellas which I think he overdid personally as the word f**k lost all meaning in that.

It's context sensitive. I'm not trying to be that kid friendly guy, i'm not barney. I'm a s****y comedian who does gaming videos! That's all. I talk about my gaming memories, funny stories, and make absurd observations out of things I see. It's all improvised, it's just that. If i'm playing a bad game or a scary game my mental state goes towards my comedic "s**t talking" side. If I adore a game like DKC then i'm going to praise it and talk about all my great and entertaining memories of it. That's what I do. It's not the same commentary every time. It's whatever the subject matter is my commentary leans towards that.

Simply if I'm playing a great game let's just say Mario World. I love that game, have played it for 20+ years now, played all the ROM hacks and homebrews of it. I love it, its my favorite of all time. I'm not going to go off making fun or hating on something i'm in love with. I will be positive, happy, talk about all the great memories of me and my sister playing that game together when we were kids.

Versus something like AVGN Adventures which is meant to be rude, crude, disgusting, satirical, comedic and i'm going to swear a lot, i'm going to make dirty jokes and say really shocking things. Even though it sounds like a cheap thrill it's still the fact that AVGN's source material is that. Rude, vulgar, angry, obscene, and cynical therefore I'm going to act that part in commentary!

I just do it naturally. I don't hold back. I don't swear for the sake of sweating on purpose though, but when I do, I just do. I never said my vids are for kids...

I had a co-worker that wanted her son to see my vids once. I told her to watch the lets plays because there isn't any swearing in those particular episodes but to avoid the main show.
