Sawyer Hartman doesn't make as much as you would think, he has over 1 million subscribers but only about 60 million views. Lets say he makes $2,000 per million views and he has been doing youtube for 3.5 years now, so that would only be roughly $35,000 a year. But he might now have even been making money off his video when he first started. Now I know he has some deleted and private videos, but those were all older before he got a lot of views so I doubt those made him a lot money. Also, he does a lot short films and being a video student I know those kind of things cost a lot of money to produce. Video equipment is expensive and I see nothing wrong with putting up a tip jar for him to get money to buy equipment to make better videos. I think that is what the tip jar is for. YouTube is marketing it as a tool for YouTubers to use the tip jar, and use the money make better content, however, I doubt that is what all them will do with the money.
