Subscribers private or public?

I'm starting to believe that people will not subscribe to a small channel even if they like its content. Do you think not showing my subscribers would help? Or would it be even worse?
 
Personally I think it would be worse. Hiding a subscriber count sends the message you either have something to hide or are insecure about the number.
 
Yeah, but when someone sees 140 subs he will most likely go away without even giving you a chance thinking your videos suck because you don't have a huge fanbase

While there are some people (including myself) who holds this mentality that you described, I'll be even more turned off by a person whose hiding it. So it's a matter of choosing the lesser of a lose-lose situation. But you managed to get to 140 subs, so I'm sure you're convinced to some degree that there's some people who'll subscribe anyways. You just gotta grind it out, while trying to get better at everything.
 
Just keep them public... Even my channel have a small fan base, but still it doesn't hurt me to show that number (which is close to 200, still about 15 to go)... If you want to make that you subscribed to somebody, then it is your choice. For instance, I have to show people - hey man I subscribed to your channel, it is pleasure to be your subscriber.

Turning off subscribers only works if you have a hot video that gaining 50+ views an hour. You're a gamer it going to be hard to get a hot video just playing a game you have to add something more to it.
 
Do people who are not youtubers even know that the youtubers choose to hide the sub-count manually?

And honestly, even I as a youtuber sometimes tend to sub/explore/watch larger channels due to their subscriber count.

In total I run 7 different channels: I hide the subscriber count for all channels with less than 1000 subs. :)
 
Public, private makes the viewers suspicious. It's like a Steam profile, if you put it on private, then you will seem like a fishy person.
