Self Advertising on Bigger Channels

I've done it myself sometimes but not like spamming. I simply put a comment on the video, then it gets a buch of likes and then you get some attention. I found out that it is something that you should not force yourself to do. You should not watch a video only because you want to leave a top comment for promotion. You should watch a video because you like it and then maybe you feel like you want to say something about it and you leave a comment. That's simply the best way.

The best strategy is to not promote at all, people will sense it straight away and thus ignore, but throw a very funny/witty comment. I've seen some hilarious stuff then I have to go see "whose saying this funny stuff?"

Or a informative, thought provoking comment will help too.

I think it's ok to comment on the video but it has to pertain to the video. If you're all 'good vid bro, check me out' then clearly it's spamesque and may even get deleted.

I never check out peoples channel that they spam on others comment sections.
if I see a really funny comment (obviously relating to the video) that has a ton of likes and replies, I sometimes hover the mouse over their icon to see if they themselves are a YouTuber, and sometimes check them out. If they hinted that they wanted that, or were subtle advertising at all, then nope.

That's what I'm generally asking about is those who spam non contributing messages like, "Hey come check out my stuff and give me feedback." 90% of the time I see if fail horribly where the other 10% get away with it. I'm sure it also has to do with the overall content those channels are posting as well. And I can understand genuine comments driving in some traffic since it's generally based on what was viewed. Idk, it's just s****y to see something like that work for some over those of us who actual put in hard work.
