Self Advertising on Bigger Channels

I'm just trying to get a sense on what is everyone's viewpoint on those who self advertise on other channels. To me, it seems cheap and is nothing more than a means to leech off those who've worked hard to get where they are. I've seen numerous comments sharing the same opinion but at the same time, I've seen a couple channels actually benefit from this tactic.
I know it's extremely hard to build a following on Youtube given on how over saturated it is with channels. The broken algorithms on the site don't help much either.

So why is it alright for some channels to get away with it while others get chastised???

To avoid being penalized, do it subtly. If you just spam the same stuffs including the links, no doubt YouTube would auto-flag them.

You have to post a generally helpful comment or something on-topic. If that gets upvoted by the mass, the attention is there.

I definitely think there is a wrong and a right way to self promote on others channels. Jumping from channel to channel posting a completely unrelated comment asking to check out your channel is the wrong way to do it, and it seems like most people are doing this, however if you post a well thought out comment that relates to the video and have related content to offer to them/their subscribers I think that is OK and I really don't mind that on my videos.

i dont think you should self promote i believe if you are being genuinely nice and positive or have something good to say then people will check you out :)

Are you talking about targeting channel with Adwords campaigns? This is actually encouraged by Google as they have all the tabs and search features nicely setup in the Dashboard, so they want you to run your ads on other channels and their videos. I have found in my ad campaigns, subs and earned views are not better by targeting channels as opposed to just using keyword targeting.

If you're talking about commenting on other channels, there is nothing wrong with that either, in fact it's encouraged, and seems it will be encouraged more by the new timeline features that Yt is planning for the future. Yt is a social network, so they want you to go to other channels and comment on their videos. If nobody does that, it ain't a very social network. Their new Heroes program is also meant to encourage interaction - you get exposure and linking to those channels for which you write subtitles for, and rewarded for cleaning up spam and inappropriate comments. I expect this will be tied with a "badge" system once the new timeline rolls out to give a better social network.

The algorithm is not broken. On the contrary, it is highly advanced and promotes videos and channels that show acceleration across a variety of stats. I have used it to great advantage to grow the channel well beyond my expectations, and every day surprises me even more. The algorithm does need a lot of study though, both what Yt provides via Creator Academy, and also a variety of academic papers you can find via ProQuest or other suitable database. It also needs a lot of careful analysis and a running spreadsheet with what happens with search and suggested placements, across time and space dimensions. The more you understand it, the more you see the ingenuity and fairness in it.

I get a lot of self promoters on my channel and YT flags them as spam for me to decide to publish or delete.
If its flagged I delete them as I can only assume YT has noticed the same comment being posted over several channels/spam.
But I do allow some self promotion to stay if its relevent and sincere. I will reply comment to them also.

On my main channel I have only actually made 1 comment on another video/channel who is very similar to mine. It was only a short cheeky message which was replied to positively.

The problem with self-promotion by most channels is that most people who make videos want to make videos and they don't know anything about promotion. So they hit other channels with a sledgehammer approach, hitting at comments with unsubtle things like, "Cool vid! Check out my channel!" and that adds nothing to the conversation at all. Plus, larger channels may have more viewers, but your comments get lost in a sea of other comments, so how effective is your unsubtle comment going to be there? It seems like a waste of time.

It's a huge waste of time. 90% of those comments will get deleted or hidden from public view, not to mention all the hate the spammer's channel will get from the big channel's audience.
