Reducing File Size, Keeping Quality

What are some of the ways you reduce the file size on your videos? My videos are around 4gb after Final Cut Pro and that is obviously far too large to upload.
I've heard of Handbrake but I find that does actually lower the quality, I play handbrake file and original next to each other and can notice the difference. Maybe my settings on Handbrake are wrong though?

Does anyone have any other programs they use to reduce the file size without hindering the quality?

Within Final Cut you are able to apply compression. For online applications such as Youtube, you wont notice any shift in quality whatsoever. I'm not a Mac fan so the exact menus and options you're given are a bit sketch in my mind but when you export as Apple Devices (or similar), they'll be a tab in which you can apply compression. The codec you should try is 'H.264'. This is a very common codec for Youtube and will still give you an MP4 file at the end - just reduced in file size.

Give it a try!

James.

I usually have videos that are thirty minutes in length, but edit them down to about ten.

I use Shadowplay with Camtasia, full 1080p HD, and they're always under 500 MB. It depends how long the videos are, how much you edit them, and what size you save them at.

Other than things like compression people have mentioned, just think about this for a second....

What causes a file to be large? Quality/detail within the content and length.

That being said...how is it you think there is some loss-less way to magically reduce file size? Handbrake is what most people will say is a go-to solution. Yes there is quality drop, its not too noticeable for some, others hate it.

I hate it.

I use Sony Vegas, render videos out, upload them, and pay for good internet. Don't have any problems.

Well, you do render them in Full HD 60fps. Which is the same I do and I get about the same filesize. I'm not seeing a big problem though. Why are these too large to upload? It works fine for me

What if he lives in Australia? :O

If you live somewhere that good Internet isn't available, consider the following:

  • Upload overnight, plan accordingly.
  • Don't do YouTube, you just don't have the necessary resources.
  • Lower your quality to 720p30 if you have to.
  • Do less videos a week if you can't upload due to Internet.
