Reality TV series offer...no thanks!

I won't mention the production company by name here, but it was a production company and not a network. I think a network would only come into play once all the pieces were in place for the show, then it gets shopped around. I know what you mean @TheDutchTexan about not wanting to work for someone else again! Even as a contractor, when things aren't your own idea it's hard to have the same level of passion and fun that you have when it's your own vision being realized.

I'm not totally against the idea, I just don't think it's the right thing for my family, at least not right now. It could be a great opportunity for another channel out there, so I do wish them well with this project, whoever they end up with.

Well if they ask you for any leads I'd be pumped if you told them about my channel (I don't want to brag but I have 716 subscribers). I'm sure they'd be all over that.

I'm glad that you're making the decision based on what you think is the right thing for your family. The following items, which you listed in your first post, are what would concern me as well.

(The loss of control over how we are presented, the time commitment, the disruption to our life and loss of privacy, and the effect on our children were all factors in our decision. )

Their sole purpose is to create a TV show. Your long-term best interest isn't their concern.

Congrats! That is amazing! I am really glad you made the decision you did. I would say you just earned my respect, but honestly you have had it for quite a while. I always enjoy your posts, and have been inspired by a couple of them in the past :)

Wow - interesting concept, wonder who they will end up with? will be tuning in.

Just as a side note - years ago I was offered a job as a production assistant for a reality show. My main job would have been to manipulate the contestants and cause drama by spreading rumours, lies and to gather gossip to report back to production. I am serious - that was the job description. It was not something I wanted to do and I didn't like the idea of living on an isolated island for 4-6 months plus after shooting I would have been unemployed and didn't want to give up my current job at the time but I digress.

So a lot of these 'reality' shows are heavily manipulated and not very real at all. Many people find they are misrepresented and edited in a way that put them in a bad light, a few reality 'stars' suffer depression after the show airs. I guess this is fine for adults as they know what they signed up for but can be unsettling for children.

So it's great to see you have been offered an opportunity and it may be a great experience depending on their goals with the series but I think your firm grasp of the pitfalls is commendable.

Ironically I think you already have more viewers on your youtube channel than if it aired on TV but it would open up a new audience.

I don't know if this is a milestone, but I didn't know where else to put it. We had a television producer of several well-known reality TV shows approach us about doing a TV series. We discussed it with them out of curiosity, but we are going to be turning it down. The loss of control over how we are presented, the time commitment, the disruption to our life and loss of privacy, and the effect on our children were all factors in our decision.

Sure, it could open up the channel to a whole new audience and it would be great publicity, but it's just not worth all the negatives. We're more open to doing a one-off type of news show (like an episode of 60 Minutes for example), but a reality series is a lot more commitment and not just something we want to do with our lives. Still, it was exciting to get the offer, so I wanted to share the news with YTtalk first!
Yeah, you're right. It's not worth the severe lack of privacy and sudden change in lifestyle. Plus your daughters are too young to deal with all that noise. You made the right choice, as hard as it is to turn down a TV offer.

I think it's pretty cool you turned down the offer - that takes a lot of resolve and conviction to stick to how you feel. If I got an offer like that I'd be all over it!

Congratulations, it's Awesome that you get TV show offers.

And I can understand the reason that you're turning it down, YouTube offers more freedom than a TV show.
Great job on all the milestones that you have been getting lately, keep it up!
