Reality TV series offer...no thanks!

Taking over the world... ...one kid at a time!
I don't know if this is a milestone, but I didn't know where else to put it. We had a television producer of several well-known reality TV shows approach us about doing a TV series. We discussed it with them out of curiosity, but we are going to be turning it down. The loss of control over how we are presented, the time commitment, the disruption to our life and loss of privacy, and the effect on our children were all factors in our decision.

Sure, it could open up the channel to a whole new audience and it would be great publicity, but it's just not worth all the negatives. We're more open to doing a one-off type of news show (like an episode of 60 Minutes for example), but a reality series is a lot more commitment and not just something we want to do with our lives. Still, it was exciting to get the offer, so I wanted to share the news with YTtalk first!

In the first place it's awesome that you got an offer for a TV show. I think you've made the right decision, if it doesn't feel good, don't do it!

I can't see what they want to offer and what restrictions they want to give you. But you have to make the cost-benefit analyses yourself. I've been reading your Youtube income is more than sufficient. And I think a TV company would give you more money, but money isn't everything. You have to do whatever is in contract, and lose freedom. The format might be totally different which you might not like.

And those commitments/negatives are also negotiable, if you don't want certain things, you can talk about it. Maybe they come with a adjusted offer with less restrictions/commitments which you'll find interesting.

You aren't scared they are going to withdraw their offer right :D? Because you don't want that what they offer in the first place ;).

Yes, that is exciting to have happen! But, I'm glad that you are looking at the big picture. Their desires and goals might not coincide with yours.
Their desires and goals might not coincide with yours.

That's always the case. They are a business and they see some added value in Babytheeth's concept, but approaches them with an offer which they themselves benefit more than anyone else.

So it's up to Babyteeth to do a counteroffer or totally reject their proposal (or accept....). The businesses knows that are most likely willing to negotiate....

It's neat that they offered! I think you are making the right decision about not going down that route. Reality TV series go out of their way to make things appear to be overly dramatic for entertainment purposes.... It's still pretty awesome! Congratulations! : D

I would hope that the producer is interested in the wholesome family aspect but I'd be afraid that they would turn it into a Honey Boo-Boo situation.

We had another member, @Video Cranker, who appeared on a news program. It was a fun piece talking about families being able to support themselves via YouTube. Unfortunately, once it actually aired, the news program seemed to focus on the money aspect

Hey Bob, funny you should mention this because we were contacted by the same company for the reality TV series, focusing on four families who are big in the kid's YouTube market! I had emailed with Kittiesmama to ask if they had been too, and yes, they were asked as well! We're soon to talk with them to learn more what it's about, sounds like you've already had the conversation! I'm skeptical but I'll talk with them to see more in detail what they have in mind. And yes, Mark is correct, we did a round of national TV interviews prior to Christmas that was supposed to focus on kids YouTube channels and how they have influence on what toys might be under trees, but instead they edited them to focus on the $$ (I didn't even tell them exactly how much we were earning but they put an actual $$ amount, ha!), and a couple of the live interview ones put us on the spot about $$ income and I didn't want to go there. So these big media companies definitely have a set agenda and they aren't always upfront about it.

Holy s**t, that means you are getting somewhere, so a huge well done to you and your children/channel. I would so take up a Reality TV offer, even though I only play WWE Games. Maybe i can be on the Muscle and Fitness front cover with my headset playing WWE? Who knows.... The future could like bright for me.

I'm glad you made a decision based on your goals instead of submitting to TV Producers' plans. If they really wanted to work with you, then they would have at least try to work with your goals as along with their goals. Selfishness does not work well in business relationships. Both parties need to be happy because they are both benefiting from the experience.
