Everyone knows tags are important since they are one of the 3 text fields you enter to make your content searchable.

Accurate keywords and keyword research goes a long way to bringing in the views but I would like to share and possibly get more ideas on unique ways to use tags.

I'll start it off.

For the gaming/entertainment niche - people's searches for content change over time and so should the tags. (Applicable to anything, but the example ahead is for these niche)

For example, before and during the week of a game release there will be an influx in keywords such as: preview, review, first impressions, thoughts, opinions on etc. With more long tail versions mixed with the topic.

After say another week or two you can bet that the tag "preview" and any that include it- are probably not going to help you drive traffic and so can be replace or trimmed. At this point people will start looking more for (even though they still looked for it before) gameplay, video, tips- or things more specific to the title: __ pvp, __ pve, __ end game - etc.

While the example just barely scratches the surface, I think that changing tags through a lifecycle of a video could end up being really important. Especially since as time may pass and their is less traffic available for certain tags/keywords you really need to optimize accordingly.

That seems like a pretty detailed piece of advice! Thanks for the tip.
What about other types of videos? Do you believe there are trends for that? Like comedy?

I imagine there are trends for every topic. You just need to figure out what they are and think less literal, while the gaming niche has things like preview>review- remember that a tags job is just to connect with an audience that will want to watch your video as opposed to just describing what your video is. So while you may do Chatroulette videos... who else might want to watch your videos, what do you think they are watching already or will watch in the future- and tag to that.

Great advice. I would like to see this expanded to other genres. Perhaps people could put their strategies down here and the OP could add them and we could get this stickied?

Ah I understand (I don't make chatroulette videos, btw. That was just a one shot thing =P)[DOUBLEPOST=1373597119,1373597018][/DOUBLEPOST]

I think he already described the gist of it. Basically we need to predict and know what our viewers or target audience is watching or is going to watch. Then we can tag appropriately so that we can connect to the videos that we want to pull viewers from.

Hopefully this is correct, OP

Yeah this should go for pretty much anything. Lets say you have a sketch about love/relationships. 50 weeks of the year the tag "valentines day" will probably not do too much for you, but for 2 weeks in February it might be a good idea to have it...[DOUBLEPOST=1373597517,1373597462][/DOUBLEPOST]

The Valentine's Day is a perfect example.

What I'd like is for anyone to throw in other examples of how they either find tags, use tags or plan around tags.

I'll go ahead and throw another example out so that the thread doesn't just focus on the first idea.

The tags of a video (along with relevance ratings, social signals, watch times etc) help decide what will be featured on the side and at the end of a video in the suggested video sections. Because a fresh video has no information besides what's in the title, description and tags... so you can actually manipulate it. You can test this yourself by uploading a video with just say 1 or 2 tags that you use in all your videos but other people don't.

For example, I could use Fevir and Fevirgaming in all of my videos and I doubt someone else would.

When you upload it, you'll see on the sidebar that only your videos show up.

SO- if you had enough of a subscriber base you could upload videos with just tags that would lead them to more of your content- since that is normally where the peak of a video's (non-viral) views come from- and lucky for you... only your videos are a click away.

I'm sure there are others ways this could be used to much greater effect, I'm just spitballing- trying to get this thread bumping

That's very useful information, so keep at it!
I remember I always put my username in my tags. I realised that it was stupid and that I wouldn't get any external views from that! So you are absolutely right!

You'll always want to have your username or handle in your tags or description so that people can find your video specifically no matter what. Like I'd have to sift through tons of entries for The Cup Song to find your entry, I throw your username in there and yay, 2nd entry... (which is still weird, who are those girls lol)
