People YouTubing For The Money

I make YouTube stuff and run a website as a hobby that creates income. I can honestly say that I wouldn't be doing it (or at least not as much) if it didn't bring in at least some cash.

If YouTube is anyone's number one method of getting money, then they better be really good at making videos.

It's 2014, if you are doing YouTube solely for the money, people can tell and you will never get anywhere. You will never get past a few subscribers because people will see right through you. A lot of YouTubers who make tons of money on YouTube didn't even know they could make money when they first started. Even PewDiePie was on YouTube a year before he got his first check.

It is important YouTube decided to do this though because some of the bigger YouTubers put tons of time and effort into their videos and it would be almost impossible to put out that much content and have a full time job. My guess is if YouTube never developed the partner program, YouTube would have even more product placement. Also, people get inspired by this big You Tubers and want to do what they do. Many people do not start a YouTube account solely for the money, but money could be one of many reasons for starting YouTube. I mean, who wouldn't want to give paid doing something they love?

After 2008 80% of youtubers do youtube for money, you think shaycarl, woodysgamertag, charlestrippy would still be here haha noo. It's a business

You might want to check your facts. First of all, in 2008 the partner program was relatively new and you had to apply so not every channel could make money. And ShayCarly didn't even start his Shaytards daily channel until almost 2009. Also, 80% of the channels on Youtube probably don't make enough to even pay their rent or mortgage, let alone a full time job. In fact, tons of partners (myself included) haven't even hit the $100 threshold. But I do get what you are saying, probably a lot of channels would not be here or would be scaled back in terms of content if it wasn't for the money, but I think your numbers were an exaggeration.

True story. I can't imagine what will happen to 50% channels if Google stop monetization program ;)

There are people working for money,
there are people working for free for charity for example.
Same with youtubers, some do it for money when others don't
do it for money. ;)

If money weren't an issue I'd make youtube videos for the rest of my life. I need to survive somehow so I need to make money =(. Best of both worlds? make money doing what you love, but it's a hard goal to achieve and somewhat frowned upon by general society. "Get a real job!" Not bad advice for a fallback, but you might as well fail at what you like doing too though.

I think I honestly hate it more when good content producers get a taste of the money they can make and that becomes their entire focus, instead of someone producing good content with money already in mind from the start.

There's plenty of examples to name here, but Pewdiepie is good enough. He got a following for being genuine. Now he's raking in the money and he's forcing himself to pump out videos that make no sense just to keep the money flowing.

On the other side of the coin there are also plenty of YouTubers who create good quality content and have a decent following, but who got started because they wanted to make money from it. There's nothing wrong with that and people can't 'tell' if someone does that. What people can 'tell' is when someone is trying to force their mediocre content down your throat just to get views.

YouTube can be a very good business opportunity if you have a talent for creating good content. But no matter how good the content, it will take a LOT of time before you are able to live off it. And that last part is what a lot of people don't understand. Unless you strike gold by accident, it takes nothing short of years to break the 3 figure monthly income.

Yeah I agree. Almost all the YouTubers making a living off YouTube, didn't know that they could make money off YouTube when they first started and never envisioned YouTube being their job. But, I see what you mean when people keep making more videos just to make money it is clear even they aren't happy anymore.

Also, I really don't like how people think all YouTubers are rich. Most the channels are YouTube are making next to nothing, only a few get lucky. A few days ago, I was watching a channel with about 30k subs and 200k views, and there was comment saying he must made a lot of money off YouTube because he had a nice computer. lol There was another YouTuber with a few hundred thousand subs, who had to make a video clearing the rumors saying YouTube doesn't pay all the bills and he isn't rich. Subscribers aren't a indicator of much money someone makes. Someone with a million subscribers could make less money then someone with 100k. Some people just have enough money to buy nice things, and it is not because money they made on YouTube. Don't assume all YouTubers all are rich, especially just because they have a ton of subs, YouTubers don't get paid for subscribers.
