As much as I respect everyone in this thread I have to disagree with your “master plan” theory. I know business and I know how it works google makes 98% of the income from advertising and with millions of hours of video that is user created being uploaded to youtube with their ads all over it making money why would they get rid of it? Youtubes whole business model is based around users and users creating and sharing their media. I don’t think in anyway that their idea is to get rid of the everyday user since that is where they make all their money.
What I think is happening is google is trying to make a uniform experience between all of their platforms, Google+, Gmail, Youtube, etc. All you are seeing here is google trying to make all of their services look the same and work seamlessly together.
