New Laptop needed! Which make?

Just looked around, and turns out Mac's are looking better for what you want for the price. It will also be better for you I think considering that Windows 8 is a complete waste of RAM as a OS. I must of not been keeping up with it all, turns out Apple are making stuff to compete still!

PC World are doing some £100 cashback system if you get a PC before the 11th of September, where if you spend over £500 on a Mac you can claim £100 back if it works fine. So the cheapest model which is a Air MD711B/A will in fact cost only £750 compared to the £850 it would cost. All the stuff inside looks alright, and it has a Solid State drive which although doesn't hold much, it is very fast compared to the hard drives. It also has a 720p Webcam if you wanted to do vlogs directly into it. So with the cashback thingy, its really good value.
 
Don't listen to them, not a Macbook. Why pay £1000 for a laptop when you can get a Windows with the same specs for £500? If you're looking for a good laptop then get the Acer Aspire V3-531. It's like £309 and it has a huge hard drive plus 8GB of ram (it's super fast!) :)

Windows 8 is awful right? It's just Windows 7 but way more complicated and incompatible to use

Yep, they have tried to make all Microsoft products the same with the 'tiles'. The Xbox, Windows Phone and the PC OS are now all on the same sort of system. On a PC it eats up RAM, and it switches between the deskop thingy and tiles by accident, they both also cannot be used together, so if I open Chrome in the tiled view, it wont also be open in the Desktop view, even though I think Chrome is different, but you get what I mean.

And why they thought it would be a good idea to remove the start button I don't know...

Also if you want to use a decent piece of software called Windows Media Center you have to have a legal license. I mean for gods sake who even buys OS's now anyway?

If you ever want a desktop Mac? Definitely. Laptop? Buy a Dell or something lol.

Ive only ever used MacBooks - and never had a problem with a single one.

With Apple you're not just buying a name, you're buying into a new OS. A different way of doing things.
Windows is king for networking and business use. But I only use MACs at home and found video editing to be a much smoother experience overall. I'd never go back to Windows for home use. Its bulky in comparison, and slows down over time. Ive had MACs running for years, switched on 24/7, and they run as fast as they did on day 1.

I work with IT for a living, so please dont think Im some fanboy etc. I dont care about either. Its all down to what you feel comfortable with. Personally I will never give up Windows for my work, but at home and for editing, Its MAC all the way.

LOL, you must never have owned a MacBook?
The quality of the unit is on another level, it makes the Acer's feel like kids toys.
Its not all about specs, its how the software and OS runs with those specs.
I work with both Windows and MAC, and have done for the past 15 years. Im forever rebuilding Windows systems due to them either getting slow over time, or coming up with some random error or another. I've rebuilt next to no MACs in comparison.
Acer's are OK for the amount you pay, but you really do get what you pay for IMO.

Have you seen the education discounts? If you are a student or have a teacher in your family or something you could get a decent amount of money off Macs- and at the moment they give £70 app vouchers with computers.

With regards to looking up stuff online, a MacBook Air would suit (I'm assuming that's what you're looking at in terms of pricing? :)), but I do wonder about video editing on an Air... It seems fine for a bit of light video editing, but I think it would ideally be a complimentary machine to something that could work better with heavier usage. I think for more full on video editing you might want to have a look at the MacBook Pro for a bit more horsepower.

I think this really depends on how much you need from your computer in terms of video editing. :) Web browsing and such can be done on any computer, so it's just getting down to the nitty gritty here! :D And also maybe even compromising- if you have particularly enjoyed using the Mac OS maybe it's worth going for an Apple machine with maybe less editing horsepower but an OS that you really enjoy and have fun with, as opposed to a Windows machine with better editing power but that you don't enjoy using as much (if that is the case)?
 
My turn for an opinion! Lol ... ok i know Windows you get good specs for cheap but they seem to break down entirely too fast... How do i know? My college friends...

-i've had my Macbook Pro since 2010 Been a champ ever since.. the only problem is my battery just gave out last month . it still works just needs to be plugged in..

-Macs are somewhat virus/trojan/malware proof.. i know you will say it isnt but i download torrents and stream a lot and i haven't caught anything...

Windows are slow and freeze a lot.. even my school computers tweak sometimes my Macs never does .. unless I'm rendering...

so all in all i recommend Macbook pro it lasts!!!
 
For the Macbook your not paying for the name, it's an awesome laptop that cannot be beat.

You will pay more up front, but look at it this way, it will save you loads of money down the road on repairs, and will last longer than a PC.

The OS is also amazing and far more intuitive than Windows.

I recommend the Macbook Pro with Retina display, but that could be overkill.
