For me it was also the software as well as the hardware.
I use MacBooks - A 2013 MacBook Air 11" as my portable machine, and a 2013 15" MacBook Pro Retina as my main workhorse (refreshed both this year with the newest models).
I always tend to go full spec with my systems as Macs tend to last a hell of a long time in terms of robustness.
Yes its very true you can get much higher spec Windows machine for the same, if not lower, price then a MacBook. But there is a reason why people still tend to pay more for an Apple machine. The software can be more specialised since its made to work with a smaller pool of hardware. The software is more refined, and works better on the hardware, so is just as fast, maybe even faster, then even a higher spec'd windows system. Its not all about hardware speed etc, its down to how that software works with that hardware. I mean, whats the point of having a super fast machine if the software can't work with it properly......
These are my observations, after using Windows laptops (and still using Windows laptops at work) in comparison to my MacBooks:
1. Quality. I don't care which manufacturer it is, they do not beat the quality of a MacBook. The attention to detail. The fantastic trackpad. Everything. It oozes quality. You need to experience it to understand what Im getting at here, but by handling and using a MacBook for a while you realise the quality is second to none. No cheaper flimsy plastic materials here. Its really solid and each dimension is 100% down to perfection.
2. Speed. Ive been using Windows machines for 15-20 years. Granted, Windows 7 is a fantastic OS. A great step up. But it still slows down over time. As you use it, it gets bogged down and needs a re-install or a good in depth cleanup to get it near to that 'as-new' speed again. With a MacBook you never have this. Seriously, it stays as fast as it was on day one no matter what you throw at it. Never had any crashes in my 5 years or so of ownership - not even one - and they are seriously fast.
3. Software. You buy a MAC for the software, not just hardware. OSX is much, MUCH, more streamlines then Windows. And you feel it. Its not as bloated as Windows, hence why it works so well, never crashes, and doesn't get bogged down. Its very simple to pick up and use. Its too simple for network use though. I wouldn't ever use a MAC in a windows networked environment (I set up large scale company networks for a living) as MACs are useless on networks. Windows is king here.
4. Security. Malware, viruses, what are they?? In the MAC world you don't worry about Antivirus etc. You just don't get any. Built in security is much tighter, and works a lot better. Windows 7 tries to implement this into their environment, but it just doesn't work well. Granted, hackers target Windows since thats the largest consumer base when you look at the bigger picture, but OSX takes care of all this for you so you don't need to worry.
5. Specialised software. Theres a reason why large musicians, film-makers, editors, etc choose MACs. The specialised software. The powerful software thats not available on Windows.
When software is created for Windows, it needs to be compatible with hundreds of graphics cards, thousands of different hardware specs, and so on. Hence you commonly get unreliable software due to incompatible hardware, driver conflicts, and so on. Since Apple create their own hardware as well as software, you don't have this with the MAC platform. The software is created for a smaller pool of hardware, and is made to work with that pool of hardware. Its more specialised and works much better on the unbloated OS.
I could go on. In essence - in a WORKPLACE/NETWORKED environment - Windows still wins.
For a HOME environment, or non-networked environment, MAC wins.
Now, Im fully expecting a backlash, or someone to come back with arguments as to why Windows is better then MAC etc.
I really don't care. I don't work for either company. I have nothing to gain. I have simply stated my thoughts from my experiences, and my recommendations. Use this information as you wish, but I'd rather not get into a Windows vs MAC debate! They both have their strengths and weaknesses, but I personally believe for a home user who wants to create YouTube videos etc, MAC is a better investment in terms of BOTH hardware and software, rather then looking at just hardware and speed alone.
