'Music' - Can I use it?

I don't from everyone but the ones I talk to they basically say yes or no or what I can and can't do based on song by song basis.
Yea that's how it works, you've got to ask before using them. We might know how it works but to someone who isn't sure and reading this thread, you have to just say that ^people can't use any music they want.

Well you do need a license.
not what the publishers tell me. Even Harry Fox and publishers tell me you only need a license if you monetize. They said they have this agreement with YouTube Directly. You can share in revenue with certain cover songs. I have personally emailed them links to my videos with songs in them and they say accept the Content ID Claim and we will let you know if it changes.[DOUBLEPOST=1428947863,1428947684][/DOUBLEPOST]

Call Harry Fox Agency (212) 370-5330 When you get the automated system press the number to get to licensing. You will be forwarded to a human. Ask them if you need a license for a cover song for YouTube if you aren't monetizing your video. See what they say[DOUBLEPOST=1428947987][/DOUBLEPOST]

also email youtube@warnerchappell.com Ask that you would like to upload a cover song to YouTube owned by them. They will tell you don't need a license unless you want to upload it to another site except for YouTube.

Sigh, Harry Fox isn't in charge of the entire internet. The fact is, before using a song, you have to do your homework, email/call the publisher/rights owner and make sure. Obviously some songs are fine to use, but not all.

Well now you are confusing me. You said you need a license but now just said some songs are fine to use not all. What are you trying to say lol

If the songs are royalty free/have a proper license, you can use them. ie: incompetech, youtube sound library, etc.
For actual songs, say Ed Sheran, you'll need a license.
Basically, you gotta look it up. Not monetising is not a free pass to upload any music

It's not! I called Sony they said right on the phone. "Our License deal with YouTube allows you to upload covers and audio recordings to YouTube such as Taylor Swift as long as you don't monetize. If you monetize you will need a license unless the content id claim says you can share in the revenue." Same thing with Warner Chappell, Universal and many others. They all have emailed me this. I even checked with several music attorney's and they say YouTube pays the license for their users to upload copyrighted content as long as they don't monetize unless it's revenue sharing. I'm done having this conversation. You haven't even explained the article I gave you about Monetizing Cover Songs because those aren't Royalty Free

It's on a case by case basis. Upload some of my friends music and you'll have it taken down, even if not monetised.
What more and more publishers are doing these days is instead of taking songs down, they claim all revenue from them and point you to where you can buy the song.
And FYI, there are more record labels than Sony/Universal etc.
