Lavalier Mic or shotgun mic?

AM2PM

Loving YTtalk
Right now I'm using a Blue Snowball for our videos but I'd like to upgrade. I was considering a shotgun mic but I was thinking a lavalier mic would be better since there are two of us and we sometimes are farther away from the camera. What do you all think? And are there any cheap, like dirt cheap options for lav mics?

Thanks in advance.

Ive tried atleast 9 different "cheap" lavs that all got great reviews...

Extreme disappointment. Sound was super SUPER bassy and not usable for anything besides a vlog or a event ( walking around a anime con asking people stuff )

Sennhieser ME 2-us ( $150 )
Best lav ive used, average sound as an end result. Usable but I still wasnt impressed

As far as shotgun mics go, almost anything that costs $50 and had some good reviews is always a win in my exp.

Or just get a rode ntg2 for $250 that thing is amazing! under priced if you ask me. I later upgraded to a Mk416 but the difference between the two mics was noticeable but not enough for me to say "get a pro grade shotgun"

Best of luck!

I agreee

If I had the money I would buy shotgun, but since budget is tight I only use the built-in mic. I'm planing on buying a Lavender mic because of its discretness and sound quality. The only downside of a Lav is the fact that they are more fragile, specially the cheap ones.

Unfortunately, shotgun/ boom mics are generally superior in sound quality. Of course, if your shot is far away, placing a boom can be impossible, so then you have to go lavalier. I guess. Does anyone know if there's any other options for recording audio for long-distance shots?

I would neverrrrrrr ever invest in cheap lavs because they always turn out terrible in terms of sound. It's just never a good idea. But if you wanna buy a solid one, they're usually around $150.

BUT if there's two of you, a shotgun mic wouldn't hurt. :) Try looking on amazon for a RODE VideoMic. I have one and I love it.
