if they are changing to a different character between cuts its not considered to be jump cutting. Maybe a better way to explain is like you film someone running across a field and you cut out a ton of frames in between and they jump but still appear to be running the camera does not change position that is a jump cut. If your filming yourself and have dead air but and reshoot half way through the sentance and cut out the middle and the moves dont make sense between the two cuts that's not a jump cut. That is what most people here are calling one. Its a form of editing done on youtube a lot but its just choppy editing and not really a jump cut. It can work well. I saw one person do a true jump cut the other day. Somehow it seems to have gotten the label jump cut on youtube this removing of the dead space without refilming it. Anyhow I said I would shut up I probably should lol. Time to eat dinner anyhow. The example up top is kind of jump cutting mostly it makes sense because he is moving closer and closer to the camera so its jump cutting pretty much. However most of what people seem to think is jump cutting isn't . And often at the end of some of these blogs I think to myself "good thing i dont have a seizure disorder" lol.

Not at all! :) Like I said, in the majority of videos you will see some form of jump cutting, and/or editing in their videos. Being able to do a recorded video in one take isn't take impressive to me personally because it's not necessary at all. I agree with who said that it could also be a bit bland. That's just my personal opinion though, and it doesn't bother me that the majority of YouTubers use this method.

Im getting a bit bored with the topic really.
Final word from me: I love jumpcutting youtubers. I am seeking to emulate the vlogbrothers mostly, and I know Im not there yet but that is the style that I am going for. Here is one of their recent videos for referance:

You may hate this style and you have every right to, it is your opinion. But I do find it a bit irritating when people call it "lazy editing" when clearly, there is a specific look and feel they are going for. You dont have to like it. But please dont crap on those of us that do.

its fine but what you just showed me is not jump cutting this is what i was trying to say. You can call it that if you like I dont mind but when I hear someone say they use "jump cutting" in a vlog i am sorry but that is not jumpcutting. :) Anyhow people are missing the point. If the idea here it to learn about movie making and video making its possible a good idea to use the terminology correctly. In any event happy 'jump cutting' I guess. I am not crapping on anyone this thread was asking about jump cutting do you like or hate it that is the title of the thread. I answered it with why i dont want to see it in vlogs and why. If you take offense to an on topic discussion go ahead. Please look at the title of the thread :)

I was wondering what people here prefer out of the two, do you:

a) Like jumpcuts made in your own videos?
b) Like jumpcuts made in other peoples videos?

I will add a poll to this thread too to see what people like, it will be multi selection so you can choose two of course.

please tell me who i am crapping on? you because you want me to like what i see in those vlogs. I am sorry I am answering accordig to the poll and question asked "do you like it and do you want to see it in other people's vlogs" i also defined it. Most vlogs including what you just showed me are not using jump cutting. You have misnamed it but either way since we are calling that jump cutting. I do according to the title of the thread, poll used and questions posed. Do not like it and dont want to see it in other people's vlogs.

and yes its my opinion which is what this thread is about. Sorry if I hurt your feelings but the reality is I DONT want to see it and I gave my reasons. I am sorry if I didnt go with the status quou on this one however in this case we are having a discussion. Use it all you like emulate to your hearts content. I will still state my opinion though and correct those calling what I am seeing in that video and tell them its not jump cutting.

If that vlogbrothers video was not jumpcutting then what would you, in fact, call it?
Because perhapes we are all very confused on terms.

I am very sorry but its not jump cutting. Most people would call it bad editing but you took offense to that statement but after the first chop to remove his error i didnt watch it past the first 20 seconds I didnt need to. If you like that kind of editing its fine however normally when you have to chop like that it would be better to re-record it so it smooths out. The 'edit' produces an illogical movement. Hence its not a jump cut.

anyhow kinda done with this I voted I dont like that kind of "youtube" edit and stated why. It seems to have taken on the name but people really aren't reading I guess. So we will call it "jump cutting" here. Still dont like it.. and dont want to see it in people's vlogs and I will leave it at that.

The chop was not to "remove an error", it was to make it look like he popped up in a different place, and this is why I take offence. Because you are accusing people of being sloppy when they are doing it on purpose.
Anyways he has 665,779 subscribers, so there are clearly many people who would disagree with you.

In any case, I said I was done with this thread and I am. Peace.

I'm with Pixie, it's a dead horse we've beaten to a pulp. My final word on the subject: Turns out my opinion is not the widely held one, it's just my preference, LOTS of people disagree with me, so don't be bothered by my dislike of jumpcuts (yes I know Urbanlamb, you say these aren't jump cuts, well then insert correct name and know what I'm talking about) but many hugely popular youtubers do it, so obviously alot of people like them. It's just my taste.

I use jumpcuts in my main channel videos because they make me look and sound more professional. I'm not good at talking continually, so jumpcuts really work for me. Otherwise I sound like I'm vlogging. I guess it just depends on if you can talk continually well or not.

I guess it all depends on the person style of editing. Me personally it depends on the type of video I'm watching. But Jumpcuts tend to get annoying after awhile and it does not really show the personality of the person imo.
