Is getting big on youtube still possible?

I've Got It
This question has been on mind mind a lot lately. Most of the big, popular youtubers started their channels before 2012 when youtube fame wasn't as big as it is now. They started making videos for fun when now people actually try to get famous because they noticed that you can make a lot of money. Do you think is it possible to get big starting now in 2014, when everyone is fame obsessed and a lot of people do it for the wrong reasons, do you thing the popular youtubers would accept you as their own/be friendly with you? or the new channels will forever be just desperate wannabes?

It's definitely still possible, just a lot harder now then it is back then.
Also, if you're doing it for money and not passion, you're screwing yourself over. :P

That's not the question you should be asking.

The question is: Can I get still fans/people to watch me?
And the answer for that is: yes.

There are thousands, THOUSANDS of YouTubers with smaller fanbases but dedicated to watching frequently.
You can do it too. :D

Popularity and fame should not be the end goal for youtubers. The reason you make youtube videos should solely be because you enjoy it. With all that being said yes I do think it is possible, it will just take more time. Like you said there are a lot more youtubers out there now so there is more content that viewers have to wade through in order to find yours. But if you make things people want to continuously watch then it is possible.

I wasn't talking specifically about myself. I don't care about fame :) i just enjoy the process. I was thinking more in general if it's still possible to get big like really big with lot's of subscribers and being friends with top youtubers and stuff or this ship has sailed. Youtube has changed and I am not sure if I understand the process :P

I figured that's what you meant. I just said it to be sure :)

Again, you're not asking the right question.
Do you want people to actually be engaged and watch your content, because THEY WANT TO/ARE INTERESTED?
Not because THEY HAVE TO OR BECAUSE YOU ASKED THEM TO? (Which is okay under a few circumstances).

You can have a CONCENTRATED fan base (500 dedicated viewers, but LOVE YOU AND YOUR CONTENT DEARLY).
Sometimes, big fanbases aren't the be all, end all solution (PewDiePie is a huge example and he had a HUGE spamming problem that he had to turn off his comments for a while)>

There are YouTubers with 500k subs to 60k subs and they have some diehard fans (including me myself ;P)
You can do it too!

Meh... Maybe.

And I think that is on the forefront of a lot of people's minds when they think about making a youtube channel. Was certainly on mine. I have a message to spread and videos I love making, but at the same time I couldn't help but think what if a big audience comes along?

For now I'll just keep bumbling along, searching for people who like and wanna see more of my content... They're hard to come by when you do news based things apparently!
