I was going to say the US elections, buuut then your audience would maybe be split
You could maybe talk about some small festivities that now are only remembered because we get to eat stuff (for example, in Barcelona we have "La Castanyada" (which is celebrated on the same day that Halloween), and basically everything we are taught is that we can eat chestnuts, sweet potatoes and "panellets", and that on the next day (which is a public holiday) it's not strange to see people paying their respects to deceased relatives).
