yes you can get your custom URL when reaching 500 subs (and some other minor requirements). I feel there's no real difference, since for both adresses you're copy-pasting anyway :p.

But my current URL is a long string of characters. I want one I can remember and write down or find on another computer without Googling if necessary.

They try to prevent people making accounts just for the sake of getting good channel URL's. But 500 subs is way too much for a requirement.
 
My first tactic to get to 100 subs was to threaten my audience if I did not reach my goal at a certain time. After I did not reach the goal by the deadline I switched to begging the audience. I still do not have 100 subs to this day. I wonder if I would have switched tactics I might have gotten better results?

A new idea. Use Google to create 100 new random accounts. Let them all sub to your channel. Profit!
 
I don't know if it was mentioned before, but try to get into contact with your fanbase. Include them for votes, what they want to see in the next video, a shoutout or an image they have to search during the video :) Also subs are not as important as views. if you have 100 subs but only a handful of your subs watch your videos, than your channel is not healthy. I somehow managed to get at least 30-40 views on every video and some of them have 100-150 views eventhough I only have 87 subs :) and also: QUALITY over QUANTITY :D
