How to gain that initial audience?

Hey! I've been doing youtube on and off for about 5 years now but never really got anywhere with it. I am now very dedicated and am wondering how you get that initial following of ~1,000 subs? When you Google "how to get subs" or "how to get yourself noticed on youtube?" most of the articles/videos are aimed towards people that already have a couple thousand and who want to get bigger. I feel like the super tiny youtubers have a much harder time getting anywhere. Thanks!

P.S. I am new here and wasn't sure where to put this thread and what not, so sorry if I messed up! :)

As I said to other people, Subs are just numbers, don't do it for the subs, do it for yourself.
Just upload videos every day or twice a week, or whatever you can.
Share your videos on facebook or with your friends.
Be very active. Be happy, be very entertaining, especially on videos.
Also, helping other youtubers and commenting hilarious comments that are connected to the video helps.

If nothing works,
you can always try livestreaming yourself jumping off a building then magically disappearing.

I know how this goes. Most will say just do such and such and you'll be fine. Literally time can be the enemy but once you are established its great. Collabing (My next endeavor) is the best way to put yourself out there with other youtubers. When I first started I just wanted support and help with my videos and my channel but if you are small or just starting out it can be really hard because people want you to show more but you don't want to vomit out all of your ideas at once.

I just became active in the community. Commented on videos that have similar content to mine. My most loyal viewers have actually subscribed because of seeing a comment that I made on a video.

I have been more active on Twitter recently and I see how much of a difference that is making. I can't believe that I have underestimated it all this time.

Also, I'm just trying to make genuine friendships within the community. We just became friendly with another vlogging couple and are talking about collaborating with them next time we visit their state.
