How to gain that initial audience?

Put yourself out there! Comment on other videos, subscribe to people you like and tell them you like them. I try to be the kind of YouTuber I would really appreciate - someone who consistently watches and comments on my videos, connects with me on Twitter/Instagram, builds a friendship with me, mentions me or recommends me in one of their videos. That's what I aim to do for other people. :)

I definitely agree with you here, the feeling in particular when one of our followers on one of your social media transcends into a friend who you can reference to in videos is pretty amazing. Even if nobody gets the reference, making subtle references, taunts and fun of other vloggers back and forth is usually hilarious. Anyway, on another note, you should get back to uploading more often, your videos were great :p

Also, it wouldn't hurt to find a niche if at all possible. I do my vlogging channel for fun but I have another YouTube channel all about living in Denver, Colorado with reviews of the area/talking about specific neighborhoods/reviewing restaurants, etc. and that one is taking off all on its own without much marketing.

So, it is interesting what a small focus can do for a channel.
 
All I can really advise you to do is make your videos about similar content instead of just a bunch of random stuff. When you're a small channel it is really hard to grow but you just gotta be persistent! There is a thread somewhere around here talking about how getting your first 100 subs is much harden then going from 100 to 1000 and even harder then going from 1000 to 10k and I am totally just realizing that. I've only been getting maybe 1 sub a week if I'm lucky but I just keep telling myself its all about persistence.

Jackie, what is your other channel where you do the restaurant reviews? I went to your page but didn't see a link to any other channels. We have been thinking about starting a new series where we review different restaurants in our area. Would love to see your videos. :)

Oh you definitely should! I'm currently in the middle of editing them so I can add in some pictures/locations since they were mainly just me talking about the areas in general and I'm gonna link it up to my channel next week once they're back up!

I would definitely recommend it though! I didn't think it would really help anyone but it has and I'm glad!

One of the things I am learning is that I can't rely on my friends and acquaintances. Very few have subscribed, which is a bit annoying but they probably aren't obsessed with YouTube as I am. Once I got over that, I have been happy to just keep putting myself out there on Twitter and such. I also agree with what lots of people say in a number of threads: as long as you are having fun making videos, keep it up and do it for that reason. I have faith that eventually my channel will gain traction, but for now, I am just enjoying myself. :)
